Dogs have a different genetic make up then wolves. They are two completely different animals.
They are, as has already been stated, the same genus and species. They can interbreed. Therefore, they do not have a "different genetic makeup" as you state. They are merely a different subspecies.
If it helps you to understand, all wolves and dogs are Canis Lupus. All humans are Homo Sapiens. Would you say that a member of a given ethnicity is a "completely different animal" than someone of a different ethnic origin?
