No. You can play Steam in offline mode no problems. You can even run most games that you got through Steam without Steam even running by navigating to their directories and clicking on the .exe.
And yet you still need the internet to validate the install. There are a lot of areas with no internet access and a lot of households that refuse to use and/or don't need internet access(I've experienced both) leaving gamers unable to play any source game for PC.
That sucks, but to be honest, if you don't have any home internet access, I doubt you'd be THAT into gaming. Yes, it would suck if you wanted to play Half-Life 2 and you couldn't because you couldn't get online to validate the install, but how many people, how large a percentage of Valve's customer base could these people possibly represent? I'm guessing "Under 1%".
I don't consider a one-time online activation of a game installation to be user-punishing DRM as I was speaking about in my post. The VAST majority of people who play video games have at least some form of home access to the internet.
If not, I BELIEVE that Steam still offers phone activation as another person posted, but I'm not 100% and I could believe either way.

Relax. Take a deep breath. Everything's not going to be O.K.
Check out my gaming blog, Zombie Arcade. Now with Minecraft videos!
I mean theres still an auto-updating client that works, from ages ago. There are actually a lot out there.
Really? How does it work? Does it use a "built in" minecraft account or is there another vulnerability in the official server?
I'm not completley sure. You don't enter any login information, though there's a blank textbox for a name.
then it's got a "force update" checkbox, an 'enter game' button, and a 'backup manager'. I could post an image, but I'm not sure if I could find the same torrent again, mainly because it's probably been replaced.

I would say there is probs a built in account, which everyone with the client uses to log in (in the background ofc), but then again, I know heaps of vulnerabilities in the minecraft server (which I am not going to disclose cuz I still use em for my own dodgeyness :tongue.gif:) so it could just as well be that.
I just wanted to add a couple things to this thread.
1. Pirates DO get all the updates. The same day the game gets updated, a new pirated copy hits the internet. The pirates just have to manually update. So using they don't get updates an excuse to let them pirate does not work in my books. IF somehow they were limited to alpha version 1.01 Then I wouldn't mind as much but at that point might as well just play classic which is free anyways.
2. Sure they can't play online... Oh wait yes they can. There are numerous "private" sites that have a large list of hacked/shared account info. As long as the people don't try to log in on the same server there will never be an issue. The only people who know there account has been compromised are the ones who have had the email/pass changed. But think about all the accounts that have been hacked but the hackers are only leeching and did NOT change the email/pass making it so the owner would never know. *CHANGE YOUR PASSWORD MONTHLY*
3. Ok let's say some of these nub pirates can't figure out how to find and join one of these private sites. They can still find other sites and servers that host the server in such a way that you do not need to have an account. All you need is to join them in a virtual LAN server and set up minecraft to play as a LAN multiplayer game. And with a little memory editing create your own custom username.
In short if the pirate/hacker/thief knows what they are doing there is very little they are missing out on. They can play online anytime they want, they get updates, and they get to lie about it in the forums.
The only difference is they have is a slightly smaller and harder time finding the servers to play online with unless they get a hacked account.
Either play classic or buy the game. There is no in-between. At the very least if they must "try" the game pirate the very early alpha without all the features of the current. and only keep it on your computer for 24 hours. After that grace period buy or delete.
If everyone here who has bought the game wants to act all righteous and smug about buying it like we are all better than the scum who pirate with no intent on purchase then so be it. I proudly will not offer support to pirates if I can help it.

Seriously how? Unless they use another account I can't think of any ways to play multiplayer for free.
The servers are cracked so that they don't require autentication from the autentication servers. Afaik that would mean that you can't have any autentication at all though, so you can't have OP's and admins in the same way since people could just use their names and thereby their mod powers.
That is at least the only way i know of that they can play on multplayer, don't think they are able to join legit servers that have the authentication enabled.

Yes and no. I agree with everything you said up until the last few paragraphs. You're being an asshole about it, and we're trying to have a discussion. Sure, some people are deviant pirates. I'm not going to shun them for that. While it doesn't entirely agree with me, it's not my choice to exclude them from a community, especially when they could contribute themselves. Yes, they could have bought the game, and I will encourage them to do so, but it's not going to make me shuuuunnnnnnnn them. Besides, I've been there, pirated my share of games, and such, and I know why people do it, and it's not because they're the sort of person who beats babies on the weekend.
Don't be a **** about it, because then we lose both a potential sale, and a contributor to the forums.
EDIT: Also no, my copy can't play on legit servers, and neither can any of the illegal copies. There are illegitimate servers and such out there for pirates, but I've never really bothered. If I really, really want to multiplay, I'll use my sisters account, if she's nice enough to let me, the *****.

Well I meant complete access to multiplayer, just so you know disabling authentication isn't "cracking" lol
My copy is pirated... but only because I have no way to buy stuff online - no paypal or credit-card, y'see. if I could, I'd get a "legit" copy as soon as I could, but right now, that's not an option for me... Please don't be mad...
I have the same argument against downloading cracked software as I do against downloading cracked music. If I like the artist, I will support them. If I feel that they did a good job and deserve some of my money, I will pay for it.
And pirating is illegal. It wouldn't be any different if you snuck into Best Buy and shoplifted a physical copy of the game or music or whatever.
I hate pirates. They think they're so "under the radar" because they download an illegal copy instead of not having the balls so go out and steal it themselves.
Now, if Paypal isn't available in your country, and you really want the game, you could simply shoot Mojang an email saying that you would pay for the game alternatively. That way you still support them, you don't have to download an illegal copy, and you get to keep an email from Mojang.

What are you, twelve? Just because nobody can stop you from doing something that doesn't mean that it's the right thing to do. Nobody is going to do anything, that's not the point of this thread, and if you actually think that "NOBODY CAN STOP ME!" is acceptable justification for doing something illegal and unethical, you should probably consider moving out of crazy-land and into the real world.
I'm not even trying to white-knight here. I don't hate pirates or any of that garbage, but that particular attitude is completely infantile.

Sneaking into Best Buy and stealing a copy is different because when you do that you are actually taking something away from somebody else. [insert store] paid for that game and they lose that money if you steal it. When you illegally download software you are not actually taking anything away from anybody. You are making a copy. That doesn't make it okay when it's their intellectual property and they have every right to charge you for providing it, HOWEVER it's not the same thing.
Incidentally, lots of regular pirates also believe that if they feel an artist or developer did a good job and deserve some of their money, they will pay for it, and they act on these beliefs. They primarily download things they never would've paid for ANYWAY (i.e, things that simply aren't that great but they still have a passing interest in) or they later buy legitimate copies of software they have pirated.
I don't think very many pirates think that it makes them some kind of cool super-ninja dude, and if so that would be more a symptom of being an idiot than being a pirate.

Sometimes you really can't get something legitimately. Maybe the guy doesn't know anybody who would pay him for some odd-jobs. Maybe he doesn't know anybody who'd be comfortable making online transactions on his behalf. Maybe he lives in a situation where the normal means of making an online transaction are completely unavailable (unlikely, I admit)... All I'm saying is, especially when you're younger, there are situations where you actually have no way of legally obtaining video games.
Then again, you can always not play it, thereby not breaking any laws or having to worry about the ethics.
Then again, if there's no possible way you can pay for something, and you pirate it, you haven't actually robbed anyone of anything. You were never going to be a sale anyway.
I think the point I'm trying to make here is that, while definitely illegal and unethical, to me, at least, piracy is a very grey area morally. It's not a simple issue. Lots of times people are making excuse for doing the wrong thing, when they know that they should, could, and would have supported the developer if they couldn't get it for free. Other times, when it's the choice between not playing something at all or pirating it, it's a little greyer. In a perfect world piracy wouldn't be a thing, but neither would poverty, censorship, or people under the age of 16. (THAT LAST ONE WAS A JOKE! PLEASE DON'T SET ME ON FIRE!)

until recently anyone could get minecraft updates, there was a server vulnerability.
Still can, actually. Where there's a will, there's a way, and the way I've got running still works.
Yeah obviously. I meant off the official server. Right now pirates can just get it off their friends.
