So I started a ravine home once before but this was way before we had the new biomes and the amplified (and then) world sliders.) It didn't go anywhere as It was a poor choice ravine, one of those fake ones, no caves running of it, let alone no abandoned mine. So I started again in the latest snapshots, Not much to see so far but I glassed over the ravine top and some weeks ago (Or a month?) I began changing the ravine floor to planks, Also in front the stairs up from the ravine I added some piston stone doors, to blend it in, keep mobs out and build a wall to cover the redstone.
It's also a double-dip ravine, after entering from the stairs on the surface, if you go right o the end, there's another one below it. The ravine is in an area near a Savanna and handily very near a desert too.

Work so far:
Off the bottom ravine, there is an abandoned mine which I'm converting into an abandoned mine storage facility. I shall keep the tracks down and have a working Minecrart ride, but speed is not a necessity for this ride.
I've created little alcoves for chests with polished granite bordering either side. Wasn't sure what to do with the floor at first but decided to keep using the new stone types with birch wood at the sides.
Before storage in the 2nd ravine, I'm creating an armory vault, it's basic to begin with though:
On the surface is the original starter farm:
Just now I came up with an inspired idea, I was looking up at the glass at the top of the ravine and the ledge half-way up all around the top ravine; and thinking - what could I build up there? At first I thought too 2-dimensionally about what "Rooms" I could have up there when I got a sudden new idea. I could have my farms up there out the way!
The sides of the ledges are 3 blocks deep, which is ideal as the middle can be for the farm tranches. Each strip of farm has a three block gap before the next one, paving over the top row between them with glass so it's safe to walk on. Although I have already had 2 - 3 creepers up there from the very dark bits - very high up. They look like farm girders up there or like you might see roof timbers on a very old house ceiling, these are farm timbers!

Work station:
First melon!
I also had to do this as the surface wheat farm as it is will not sustain me. I had half a heart when I made all this, so I was desperate for food.
I shall keep this thread updated. Your thoughts are appreciated.

You've made considerable progress as opposed to my earlier attempt to make a ravine base. When I had the idea a couple months ago, I went for a "natural" looking theme for my ravine base, and covered the entire bottom with grass blocks which I later planted trees and other foliage on. It actually looked really nice, until that one time when I decided to use TNT to clear land for an artificial lake nearby. Long story short, some faulty explosives let my beautiful ravine base end up looking like Chernobyl.

leangreen,that's a really cool base!
Currently i'm trying to do something similar in my world,and your base is a great source of inspiration;
I really want to see the finished product, that seems promising.
Good luck with your world

That's a shame :-/ I like your idea with the natural look though, gives me an idea for the other ravine and it's upper section. I think I will dirt it over and try and grow trees there. Not Oak, Acacia or birch however as there are plenty on the surface, especially the with the rate I've been replanting birch whenever I chop one down! No this will be exclusively for Spruce trees, Jungle trees and Dark Oak. Will be fun to see if I can get very tall Jungle trees to grow in there!
So as I can't leave it alone, I did more this morning. The pumpkins and melons are in full bloom, so I'm not going hungry now! I also dug into the side of the ravine wall and created some proper steps up, only cobble for now, a temporary means.
After acquiring a lot of dirt, (I love the fact you can uncover lots deep within the walls of ravines, where you won't see it) and smelting another two stacks of sand I finished the farm trenches all the way back to the piston doors. (Updated pic, done ages ago). It hasn't been hoe'd yet, but is built in advances for carrots and potatoes when I get them. Work station has been took down but the 2x infinite water sources remain.
At the far end by the piston doors I covered that area over with dirt completely, 2 layers at the end corner for the proposed little sand area for Cactus and reeds around a little pond. I went travelling and came back with a sunflower and what I thought was two of the newer tall plants, the rose bush was in fact a red tulip, and planted them on the dirt area before the sand-pond as well as red and brown mushrooms to grow. As the base layer of the pond had to look natural with sand, the 2 layers of dirt were needed to uphold it otherwise it's just fall to the bottom of the ravine.
Now for the second ravine dirt-over.
IN PROGRESS:
AFTER (So far):
In the immediate area of level dirt by the farms, I might have my coca bean farm eventually.
Bonus Pics:
This is my journey to storage down from the first ravine:
*Weapons armory shown in first post is just to the left.
Further down that way:
Might be it for this weekend, will see how I feel.
