I was just mining away at the center of the earth when I suddenly took a heart of damage. I don't know what happened. It scarred the hell out of me because the my mineshaft was fully lit, no monsters or anything. o.o what happened?

Woah! Look at that! (Pssst. It's a game development blog.)
well there is ghost a.k.a monsters that are invisable and can hit you for a heart of half of damage then dissapers after the game notices i think notch fixed it in beta 1.2_01

Uh? The only ghosts were the weird things where monsters could spawn on Peaceful for a split second. Not that they could do anything.
There are no enemies that deal random damage and then disappear.
Notch may add that next Halloween, but for now, that's not correct.
It's more likely a clipping bug.

Those were only bugs on Peaceful. They spawned, but then noticed it was Peaceful, and dissapeared.
Mobs don't spawn within a certain distance of you - they would have dissapeared far before you got close.
I guess he was standing on a block with a torch while he got hit by a falling block.
Only falling anvils deal damage though; the only way you'd take damage from having sand or gravel fall on you is if it becomes a block while your head is in it, which will not happen if you are standing on a torch or a torch is at head level because they will drop as items (maybe if you were right next to the block they fell on and they just barely clipped into your bounding box, which I've experienced many times without the suffocation overlay being activated so I can see how one might confuse this for random damage). Otherwise, there have been various bugs across many versions which cause entities, including hostile mobs, to become invisible.
Back in the year this thread was started I was new to Minecraft and, I think, playing my first world.
I have fought off several mobs and was inside a well lit safe structure doing something and I started taking hits.
My health was going down and I couldn't see who was damaging me.
I thought there was an invisible mob in my house with me attacking me.
Of course I died and respawned close enough to recover most of my inventory.
It was nearly 7 years later I was thinking about that strange death and it dawned on me that there was no invisible mob.
I had starved to death!!!
DOOH!

Wow, this thread is old!

My projects:
-are abandoned for now. I might pick 'em up in the future.
For now i'm working on a private modpack that suit's my own playstyle.
I am gonna stay in modded 1.12.2 untill my potato dies. No mercy! :Q

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
I bet on some suffocation glitch. It happens all the time on laggy servers (lag can also not being server-side but network side).
