Ok people please stop complaining about the lag. I have solved how to fix it because it lagged for me too. Here are my specs:
Processor: U7300 @ 1.30 GHz (2 CPUs)\
Memory: 4 Gigs
Graphix: GeForce GT 355M
But personally I don't think it matters what your specs are. The problem is that the engine is generating the map too slow. What you need to do is press esc (escape) and wait a bit. Just a second or two. It should have loaded the map enough now.
If you want to see for yourself you can mine (or dig. whatever.) a lot of dirt and then keep building right under your feet. You can then see a good distance depending on your fog. You should see that the map is not loaded. Just look in a direction and press esc. You should see the map load really fast, and the lag should be reduced to about nothing.
I hope this works for you guys because it worked for me.
Not sure. I noticed the huge FPS drop. Was getting over 130FPS before and now it wont sustain 40FPS. I used the MC loader to load the Arid Textures and the game is back to alpha state and the FPS are back where they need to be. I guess I'll play it like this for a while since I haven't really noticed anything new and the FPS drop is ruining the experience. Sounds like notch is aware and will have a fix eventually, probably tomorrow.

The only thing that fixed the FPS problem for me was deleting my minecraft folder. Backup your saves, but deleting it fixed it completely.
Did both. Helped a little. Basically didn't do anything.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, an opinion cant be awful. Its an opinion. Its your opinion that his opinion is awful.

I don't have a clue how to deal with the massive performance drop but I copied the files and updated my client to beta and it was pretty much unplayable how slow it was. I don't remember exactly which version but until all this major crap is ironed out I'm sticking with alpha so I can at least play without it feeling like an interactive flip book. I know it's a game in development so no need to trumpet all the rhetoric at me but so far beta is pretty much a non-upgrade for me.

Let each player retain the freedom to determine their own playing experience. Realize that not everyone likes to play the same way you do. Keep difficult elements of Minecraft optional!
Tried pausing and waiting, deleting .minecraft and creating an entirely new world. In my new, clean world my fps was better, but still nowhere near playable.
My computer aint that powerful, it's a year old netbook. But before the update, i was able to have a steady, playable FPS with the shortest view distance and such. Bad fps makes sad :sad.gif:

Sorta.
I think it's the trees causing the problem. I'll have 30fps wandering about, then if I get close to even ONE tree, I drop to like, 9fps.
