Well I made some hive textures and took some screenshots. The occupied hive looks a bit tacky and looks rather... empty whilst the empty hive looks occupied. Bother.

Change the hive to be a re textured skull (Imagine a skeleton with a beehive head!). It will look better than a slab IMO.

190% support. We need a new harvestable, useful yet (possibly) semi- harmful block setup (cacti being the first IMO). also, a question about your concept art, how did you make that hive block look so realistic? also, such things as using a special tool to knock them out, and lift the hive, could be good with making a bee farm, simply build a space that auto grows flowers and a tree, place as many hives onto a tree, and collect it all slowly would be useful in economy servers and single player.

Unless you use mods like industrialcraft or forestry, I don't think that would work. Although, you could set it up to piston push the hive, off a tree with flowers nearby, away, making it drop and using a hopper minecart to pick the wax pieces up.
I'm thinking of making the hives spawn on birch and spruce trees instead since oak already has a lot of uses.
Opinions?
I'd say just on Birch trees. Spruce trees don't make as much sense because they are found in colder biomes, and if it is on Birch trees it can make the Birch Forest biome unique and more valuable.

I noticed on the title: not your average bee suggestion.
This was exactly an average bee suggestions. Bees, hives, flowers, resources, the whole lot!
But of course, these bees are different! No, this idea didn't come from feed the beast at all!
Yeah, let's add bees to minecradt, even though the only other insect is a silverfish, and even though we have miniature, and cheap, beacons we'll be adding to make the game more overpowered. I mean, it's only fun if it's really easy, right? And yes, let's go ahead and add farmable hives too, especially since real beehives start with a random chunk of wax just sitting on a log.
And sealing books with wax! Oh, another great idea. Now no one can read my book, and if they do, I'll know... That's an excellent deterrent to griefers and thieves, oh yes...
Oh hey! How about we make the wax smelt able too?! Yes, and it can burn an overpowered amount of 8 times per piece! That would make wax so balanced to the game, especially since wood can only burn 3 times! Since we can farm hives, well have an infinite source of fuel! This is great, let's add some other overpowered stuff, let's see here...
Aha! Waterproofing clothes! Good one! That's exactly what minecrFt needs, more clutter. We've all been waiting for more complexity, and finally it has arrived! Yay!
Seriously people! Balance your mods! Don't just spew them out onto the forums as soon as you think of them!
I noticed on the title: not your average bee suggestion. Well spotted.
This was exactly an average bee suggestions. Bees, Where did I suggest them?
hives, Well one cannot have bees without hives.
flowers, When one thinks of bees, flowers generally come into the equation too.
resources, the whole lot! That's nice. Take a jungle. You have the trees. The grass. The cocoa bean. The watermelon. The ubiquitous cat. The whole lot!
But of course, these bees are different! Indeed they are.
No, this idea didn't come from feed the beast at all! I know. It didn't. It came from me.
Yeah, let's add bees to minecradt, even though the only other insect is a silverfish, And? Spiders are the only arachnid.
and even though we have miniature, and cheap, beacons we'll be adding to make the game more overpowered. How are they overpowered?
I mean, it's only fun if it's really easy, right? And yes, let's go ahead and add farmable hives too, especially since real beehives start with a random chunk of wax just sitting on a log. Yes, they do. If you put an empty hive, bees may come and recolonise it.
And sealing books with wax! Oh, another great idea. Now no one can read my book, and if they do, I'll know... That's an excellent deterrent to griefers and thieves, oh yes... That is not its main purpose. The point of sealing books is to PROVE it has been opened. Since you can tell who opened it, it allows you to take preventative measures.
Oh hey! How about we make the wax smelt able too?! Yes, and it can burn an overpowered amount of 8 times per piece! That would make wax so balanced to the game, especially since wood can only burn 3 times! Since we can farm hives, well have an infinite source of fuel! As is implied in all suggestions, all numbers are subject to change.
This is great, let's add some other overpowered stuff, let's see here...
Aha! Waterproofing clothes! Good one! That's exactly what minecrFt needs, more clutter. We've all been waiting for more complexity, and finally it has arrived! Yay! Yay!
Seriously people! Balance your mods! Don't just spew them out onto the forums as soon as you think of them! Very much so. Luckily, this isn't a mod.
If you feel this suggestion is overpowered, you can suggest ways to make it more balanced. Thank you for not being a ***** and helping me to improve this idea.
I noticed on the title: not your average bee suggestion.
This was exactly an average bee suggestions. Bees, hives, flowers, resources, the whole lot! Not too terribly much you can do with bees while still calling them bees. But the way the Hive changes in relation to the variety and number of flowers nearby is unique. As is not adding an actual Bee mob, and just having damage from exposure over time. Also, you are really going to fault him because his idea about bees and beehives has bees and beehives in it, and they give you resources? Really?
But of course, these bees are different! No, this idea didn't come from feed the beast at all! Tons of ideas have been done by mods already. That doesn't mean they ripped off the mod, nor does it make it the exact same thing. Finally, it doesn't make the idea a bad one by itself.
Well, bee hives to be more exact. And for some reason only having one other insect makes adding more types of insects bad to you? That totally makes logical sense. The next part of your critique is basically incomprehensible. "and even though we have miniature, and cheap, beacons we'll be adding to make the game more overpowered." What does that even mean? Beacons are currently the hardest item to get in the game at full power, so you can't be talking about the current Beacons. Also, the closest thing possible to the "game being overpowered" is saying that the game is unfairly difficult. I think you meant that the player is overpowered and the game is too easy. But that sentence was kind of a mess so I'm not sure what you meant.
And sealing books with wax! Oh, another great idea. Now no one can read my book, and if they do, I'll know... That's an excellent deterrent to griefers and thieves, oh yes... So it has one function, which isn't the primary function, that isn't going to be super useful to every single person. Neither is dyeing Leather Armor, or having books in general (I've never needed one). You also kind of missed the point on that one.
You mean like Charcoal, the infinite fuel source that burns the same amount of time as the Wax, can be farmed by growing trees, and can be farmed in larger amounts in shorter times because one tree has many Logs to make into Charcoal and doesn't rely on flowers to grow? Besides, fuel is just SO hard to come by. I mean you can only use Coal, Charcoal, Wood, Wood Planks, Wood Slabs, Saplings, Wood Tools/Weapons, Wood Pressure Plates, Sticks, Fences, Fence Gates, Wooden Stairs, Trapdoors, Crafting Tables, Bookshelves, Chests, Trapped Chests. Daylight Sensors, Jukeboxes, Note Blocks, Huge Mushrooms, Blaze Rods, Blocks of Coal, and Lava Buckets. If they added any more fuel sources it would just be TOO easy to smelt things.
Aha! Waterproofing clothes! Good one! That's exactly what minecrFt needs, more clutter. We've all been waiting for more complexity, and finally it has arrived! Yay! If a totally optional way to preserve the look of a mostly aesthetic item that involves putting both items into a crafting table and then clicking the output is complex to you, I am concerned.
Seriously people! Balance your mods! Don't just spew them out onto the forums as soon as you think of them! What mod? This is a suggestion for vanilla. And while the idea isn't perfect it isn't awful, and it is way better than this sordid attempt at criticism.

I think he means the candles are like a miniature and cheap beacon and that their addition will be overpowered.
The first part I disagree; they can actually be larger than a solitary beacon. I don't take into consideration the wick or the beam though. They are cheaper but that is balanced by:
- They require a potion per block.
- They burn and thus need replacing every so often.
- The radius is smaller than a beacon.
- They serve different purposes; candles are more for smaller, temporary uses and beacons for more permanent, possibly communal uses.
The last part I disagree as well, as per the aforementioned setbacks.

I can see these mini beacons as being semi overpowered though, mainly because after a high initial investment getting the equipment, you can farm pretty much all of these ingredients for many of the potion beacons. On top of that, you could pack 2-3 of them together in a single place, which could give you Resistance, Regeneration, and Strength all at once, albeit in a small area. If anything I would say to limit potion candles so they only have one stage and/or burn faster (maybe level 2 potions made into candles burn faster than level 1 versions).
One thing that I am confused about though, you say it gives the effect in a 16x16 area. Does that mean it extends from the candle to the sky or ceiling like a beacon block? If so I think it should actually give the effect in a sphere around the candle with a radius of 8 blocks. That gives you a decent sized sphere and would make more sense than a regular beacon effect or giving the effect in a cube or rectangular area.

I have four small, but important concerns to make them more interesting.
1. Bees are normally territorial, and won't build near each other until it's an ally of some sort. I suggest that beehives need a minimum of 3 blocks of distance.
2. Bees will need the whole oak tree. Because I can see how it would end up being if you remove the leaves but leave the logs there. It still counts as a tree in the code. So bees would need to have a minimum of 8 leaf blocks within a 4x4x4 radius (or same as the flowers).
3.I suggest beehives only viable in plains, forests, birch forests and flower forests. They should also spawn more commonly in flower forests and be larger, hence the amount of flowers.
4.Will different types of flowers affect the size of the hive? Do 2-blocks tall flowers make the hive larger? Example: The hive is affected by a certain score. The score is the amount/type of flower nearby. Normal flowers give 1,tulips give 2 (could be removed) and 2-blocks tall flowers give 3. A size 1 hive is a score from 10-15. Size 2 is 16-25 Size 3 is 26-30 and size 4 would be +30. Just a suggestion.

also, if you make a model for it, wild hives tend to be make of vertical slabs of wax; keep that in mind.
good suggestion!

Since the logs in Minecraft are much thicker, I thickened the hive considerably.
Although, I must say that the texture looks more like a sponge than a hive.
Opinions?
I'd say just on Birch trees. Spruce trees don't make as much sense because they are found in colder biomes, and if it is on Birch trees it can make the Birch Forest biome unique and more valuable.

edit: They do. Now that I see them, they don't look really good in birch forests. I think birches are too short.

So yes, they do give stings which, as per Section 1, Paragraph 5, Line 2:
