This would be convenient. Perhaps you could make chests with different kinds of locks of combinations, but otherwise I like it. While it is true that you can create locks using redstone its always simple to just break the redstone and open it yourself. But that brings the question, what happens if someone breaks the safe? Do the items just fall out (making the lock obsolete), or would you be the only person who can break it? If that's the case, they can be used as an indestructible block in survival, which is a no no.
I suppose they can be used sort of like bike locks. They don't actually keep your bike safe, but they do discourage most people from attempting to take it.
Servers could simply disable them, have admins remove them themselves, or let people do what they want with them. People always seem overly concerned about potential ways that additions to minecraft could be abused, but realize that servers can do whatever they want with it, so it really is a non-issue.
Well, people can just mine it. Make it unbreakable? Congratulations, you have placable bedrock. How will we even know the code?
The idea is that anyone can guess the four digit combination, but it might take a while. Also, any sever can disable it to prevent griefing with it. I do understand where you guys are coming from, but this is not bedrock.
It's a good idea, but there are many loopholes and flaws to it. If these problems can be overcome, I'll support it fully. Meanwhile, I'm still on the fence about it. This idea could be implemented in a SMP-Update where everything benefits SMP.
Theoretically, it's great.
However, in the real world, there's bound to be people abusing it and its loopholes.

Don't argue with idiots. They bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.
There may be a solution to the abuse problem. This is assuming the operators on this server are honest and not corrupt; there could be a key system instead; you could create a key and name it with an anvil. You would use this key to lock and unlock your safe.
Safes would take a very long time to break when locked; 1 to 2 minutes however when unlocked, it takes only 5 seconds with a diamond pickaxe. If the safe is broken, the items will not drop. Instead, it will reappear if the same player places another safe in the place where it was removed from.
There also could be an operator only item which would unlock any safe and therefore make it mineable.
There is an NBT tag that allows chests to be locked. You basically set a word as the password, then the chest can only be opened by someone holding an item that's name is the password.
So, No Support as this is already doable.

Ever had something (or somebody) on your railroad that you did not want there?
I'm not surprised that chests can be locked in vanilla with commands, but part of this idea is the aesthetics. They would just look cool. What if you hid one behind a painting? A safe behind a painting would be beast. I think this concept has a lot of potential, but also has major flaws that need to be ironed out before it is feasible.
I also don't think that being able to do something more than one way has to be a bad thing either. It gives the player more choice between practicality and appearance.
It would be a perfect addition, if ender chest weren't added, but Enderchests work similar to Item safes, if not better, because other players cannot access it. but the concept and detail is appreciable.
1: The fact that the chest is impossible to break without the items being taken out of it makes it an extremely good griefing tool, especially in creative mode
2: There is no point, you can use an Ender chest for just having personal storage, and don't say "What about adventure maps?" because those can simply be done with some hoppers and dispensers (Droppers if your trying to give something like eggs or arrows)
Isn't that an enderchest? Same concept and locked chest seem pointless except for servers which we make the suggestion pointless because there are plugins that do just that.
half support because i think it'd just be easier to make it so you can get double enderchests full of stuff and if you wanna get both sides of the chest u have to place down two chests

How many times do I have to say that it is not impossible to break? ANYONE can guess the four digit pin. People will probably also chose easy pins to remember such as 1234 or 2468.

The issue with enderchests is that there is a very limited amount of stuff you can store in it. A double enderchest would have a problem of its own, being that if you had a double enderchest, and an enderchest, how would the inventory work?

well if you place two chests down and fill them up then break one of the chests it will only drops say the items that would be on the bottom of the chest.(not exactly sure how that works) but using the idea that each chest is half a double enderchest could work the same way so if u need to access half of it you need to place down two chests somewhere

This has been in Minecraft for a few snapshots now. http://minecraft.gamepedia.com/14w02a
