It's a silly misconception that even "full grown" adults run into.
It's the notion of restriction and innate effectiveness. Here's the reasoning:
1) I don't like people to steal my stuff.
2) We should make theft illegal
3) People aren't stealing my stuff anymore!
Which plain doesn't add up. Simply because you create/enforce a restriction doesn't mean people won't try to work around the restriction. *removed by self due to possible escalation*
Essentially, when you create a restriction. The only ones that will follow/obey the restriction will be the only ones that agree upon it. Because I've never seen a 14 year old pick up a can of beer and begin chugging while taking draws from a cigarette.
(still) ON TOPIC
Age is not a number. Age is not about maturity. Age is about how you use your experiences to handle your responsibilities.
Also, quick heads up: most people that say they're mature really aren't... at all. I frown upon communities that use such a term as though it has any merit as it will only be used as a target for those seeking acknowledgement from those that see them as immature; especially when looking at guilds for MMOs "looking for mature members!" - Such a flag rarely attracts actually "mature" members, but those that want to be seen as mature.
As unusual as it sounds, you begin to look and sound mature when the concept of maturity is no longer an issue to you. When "am I mature?" becomes "who cares if I'm mature?!" I personally consider myself ridiculously immature at the age of 29. I make rude and misogynistic jokes to my wife. My best friend and I take turns slugging it out on the games we play. I entertain these topics and hold several large topics. Still, I know many people see me as some kind of beacon of wisdom or symbol of intellect.

No support; as many have said not all kids are immature, just some of them. Plus kids are definitely not the only ones who spam 'Budder' all the time. BUT
There does need to be cuss restrictions, it's so distracting and annoying.
I think that there needs to be a VERY STRICT age minimum for servers.
This is to get rid of all the little kids who clog servers talking about butter and ruining the game for every one else. I know that some of you are in sky army so you won't support, so if you're in sky army just leave this topic. WE NEED THIS TO GET RID OF BUDDER SPAMMERS!
This is a very narrow-minded approach to the problem. Refusing young children access to servers in hopes to stop spammers won't work because:
Not all sky fans are children
Not all children are sky fans
A better and less discriminatory way to solve this issue is to ask the server owner to install a filter that replaces the word budder with gold in chat and signs.

Yes, I am nine.
But on all the servers I go on, it's more the kids that keep quiet. Most spamming and cussing is from adult Minecraft players. So, even if an age requirement is slapped on, it won't stop about 60% of spamming.

I once heard someone say you could fight off the Ender Dragon with sticks. He was the smartest person I have ever met.
No Support there's no need for this and minecraft does not really care what servers you go on and that's a little age descriminitory. I see your point but know one will ever agree with this to be allowed, and not all young kids who play minecraft are like that.
I AM in favor of banning chat abilities to players who cannot pass a hilariously simple literacy test, like in what's in place in the KoL.
It actually works. Roots out 90% of chat problems.
What about people that speak a different language?! Not all minecraft servers are english!!!

If you add an age restriction, you lose half the audience.
That's 600,450,250 players down the toilet.

Millions of people and a single age restriction would lose hundreds of people, nice logic.
Age restricions wouldn't be half bad other than the fact that im not the one making the money(it would completely break the profits/investments they have). The community is also childish so its not like its needed, and the chance of a kid stumbling on to a server and learning a bunch of things they "shouldnt" is only their fault.
edit, yeah i didnt see the server part i thought you were talking about minecraft as a hole, however there is no way to prove they are of age for the server but still i was more mature when i signed up for minecraft than most people play this game
This isn't a problem Minecraft should solve. It should be solved by the administrators of servers and forums.
This forever. Mojang shouldn't get involved with server politics, especially since they aren't actually running those servers or paying for the hardware or anything. Let the people that actually do that stuff decide on who plays on their server.
Seeing as current age restrictions on websites require the user themselves to enter their own age this suggestion is pointless. In fact it would only screen out honest children who (in my experience) are far less likely to be obnoxious.
Your "VERY STRICT age restriction" policy would backfire horribly.
Besides, this kind of thing should be the responsibility of server admins anyway, not Mojang. No Support.

It's about the maturity.
There can be 10 year olds who are more mature than 21 year olds.
Even if that was decided, how would it be implemented and enforced?

Me too, bro.

And thank you for clearing up where this budder thing started. I didn't know until now.
An age restriction is something that should be left up to server admins. A global age limit would be unfair.
