Put me in with the "I don't think it's necessary" crowd.
In the end, my hope is that the game will need fewer things, and that that set of limited pieces will have better and broader interactions. Two or more different colors of sand just so you can differentiate between whether a palm tree can be planted in it or not doesn't strike me as a useful addition.
Things like giving the existing sand more interactions with the world (erosion by fast moving water, slowing down walking speed, inclusion in the brick making process, etc) is where I'd rather see things focused.
I don't think that desert sand should be a different kind of sand. Perhaps it should just change color depending on the biome just like grass does. When you pick it up, it will look like regular sand in the inventory, but it will be more desert-looking when placed in a desert biome.

That's a good idea, biomes are determined by moisture so dry desert sand would be pale and beach sand should be darker. Also I think water shouldn't even generate in desert biomes, well there should be a chance of an oasis but that's it.

I pledge alliegance to the Great Alliance of the Medieval European Nations, with my sword, and my shield, to forever use my blade with great moral responsibilities, and to serve in all of my king's wars and protect the Great Kingdom.
A better solution might be to have sand have a color change like grass does. You'd then not only have red deserts, you'd have all sorts of colors (but beaches and deserts would still be different like how tundra grass and forest grass are different), though of course there wouldn't be blue deserts or anything anymore than there is blue grass.
yet if you post a similar idea it's "USE THE SEARCH BAR/GOOGLE DERP"
I know, right?
Besides, this is linked to by the big sticky that says "Read this first so you can find out if someone tried the same idea before, so you can avoid making yet another post on the same topic."
If that's not a reason to post to old threads, I'm not sure what would be.
As far as red deserts: Why don't we have Wasteland blocks?
I remember this ground type back in Heroes of Might and Magic. Made awesome-looking sections of dismal places you didn't want to travel through much. Red, raw, cracked earth. Like the moisture was gone from it forever.
Deserts aren't all about endless sands, after all. They're far more colorful than most cartoon versions make them out to be. And Minecraft could easily incorporate another block or two to liven them up. I'd suggest Wasteland and Savannah Grass (a yellowy grass block on dry, yellowed/tan dirt... while making our Zoo Tycoon mod we tried Savannah Grass on regular dirt and next to sand it just looked awful).
But an endless, water-free desert would be far more enjoyable with the variety that came from a couple of blocks. (Imagine red mesas rising high above the cracked floor... like Thousand Needles.) And then you could actually craft tiny oases around the little pockets of water here and there. Hidden down in tiny valleys so you can't see them until you're right on top of them and you think it must be the sun getting to you, making all that greenery and fresh water.
Or even river basins around the rivers that flow through arid lands. This'd look far more realistic, I think.
As to the difference between Deserts and Beaches... it sure isn't cacti. But do Palms grow in the desert, apart from pockets of water? I'm not really sure.
I have thought that there ought to be some sort of difference between these two regions, but I'm not really sure what it would be. Weather patterns, at the very least.
My YouTube channel is currently on hiatus, but I hope to get back to it at some point. Content is fairly random, but can be enjoyable, and is mostly game footage (mostly random Minecraft clips) from my nephews and me. Most popular MC vid so far is the one Vechs laughed at on Twitter!
