New types of sand would be great, if not a little bit redundant in some other ways... I especially love that you noted sand, dirt, and stone for desert, since they should all be different, and not every desert is made of sand :biggrin.gif:
Cacti can spawn on any sand, which means they can spawn on beaches.
I think they should have a specific Sand, dirt and Stone textures for Desert Biomes.
Desert Sand
Desert Dirt should have a reddish color to it. And Desert Stone should look like Limestone.
I dont mean to sound like a flamer but this is the stupidest thign i have ever heard.
YES: desetts and beaches have different types of sand, but cacti grow in both, and on soil. Cacti arent only desert plants. take a stroll down ocean blvd in ft lauderdale for some inspiration

I think this is a must have. Cacti should grow on desert sand and palm trees should grow on beach sand. I actually have a desert sand texture, how big do block textures have to be?
Why don't you make it like farms. If sand is near water it looks like it does now and cacti don't grow. But when sand is away from water it turns a little red and cacti grow. Its just like plowed grass or whatever being irragated.
BTW cactus need to be a lot more common, I went coming beaches in a boat for 10mb on fresh map and didn't find a single one.
No, I think there should be two kinds of sand: Desert and beach. Desert sand will be generated only in deserts and beach sand will be generated only near water (just like it does now). Easy as pie.
And redundant as hell!

This may be a fad, but I love dragons, so why the heck not?

Why? It doesn't need any additional coding; Notch will just make desert sand block appear on very large area of flat terrain instead of dirt. And with cacti instead of trees. The beach sand part is already done. This would take from 10 mins to 2 hours of coding (in worst case, like aliens running around in Notch's garden and kidnapping Ez).

wouldn't notch's daring space rescue be plagued with relativity? When he gets back, most of us will be dead.
Whats wrong with different colors of sand. It would give a greater distinction between Biomes even if they did the same thing. Golden sands of the virgin islands. black and green sands of volcanic hawaii. Pink in the caribbean, and of course the classic white. Same with dirt/clay with the reds and browns and beige, the darker red earthy tones would be great for the desert plus dried yellow grasses. Desert mountains should also have cobble with normal stone, and let cactus and shrubs grow on cobble. When i lived in the mojave, went mountain climbing, those prickly sobs will use any crack in stone to grow.
Its not so much of the utility which people will have, for the preference of color at least. but for the immersion and looks good.
I have no problem with only one type of "sand" but cacti should only grow if it is no where near water, Also palm trees should grow near water. This would allow for desert oasis too.

I agree with this idea, and the palm tree idea. Although I do think that more than 3 different sand colors would be a bit too much. There really shouldn't be a color added unless a certain functionality (like cactus growing on it) is included, otherwise it is just to prettify the game....
Erm, cacti are plants. Believe it or not, they like water as well
I am against this. There is no functional difference between desert and beach sand. And cacti as a whole aren't discriminatory to sand. If there were different species, then sure, but...
If you instead had it as something like snow (sand in a dry biome gets a layer of wavy sand), then sure, why not. But a block with the only difference being colour and some slight waves that would only be seen from the top? Even the bookcase does better than that =/
I don't feel this is necessary. Deserts have all sorts of sand colors, and I've been to one made of white sand. And, I'll tell you, without water, it doesn't look much like a beach. Once we see full deserts made of the light colored sand, I'm sure it will look just fine.

Nature should really stop catering to all these furries! I mean, do we REALLY need two kinds of elephant? Puh-leaze.

With limestone we could make cool looking pyramids :biggrin.gif:

ANYWAY, yes I want this.
But the cacti should still grow in other places.
Cacti grow pretty much everywhere irl.
