This whole discussion is really pointless and I don't think that it going to change directions and favor removing the option. Perhaps an admin should lock this?
Pro Tip: You can actually change the brightness of your game without using the brightness slider in-game. There's a file called options.txt in Minecraft's root directory. Once you open it, you can set the gamma to a number higher than 1.0 (which is the maximum amount on the slider in-game). If you set it to something like 10.0, nighttime will be as bright as day. XD
OT: Like everybody has already pointed out, Mojang added the brightness slider in the options for a reason. Some people don't want the game to look incredibly dark, some do. Different people have different preferences and Mojang was aware of that.

Question: If I have 10 ice cubes and you have 11 apples, how many pancakes will fit on the roof?
Answer: Purple, because aliens don't wear hats.

The perfect thing to bring up on servers that say "no full-brightness mods". There are so many ways to see in the dark.
So... Today I've been noticing that not many minecrafters play with the brightness moody
Yeah, most players don't play with their LCD backlight off, either.
and i'm kinda getting sick of it!
People have different preferences than you. get over it.
The reason why caves were scary when we we're noobs is because we didn't know about the brightness option
Oh, cool! Thanks for speaking for everybody! personally when I started playing there literally WAS no brightness option. Caves were 'scary' because I didn't know what to expect. I wasn't familiar with the game- I didn't know how monsters spawned. Arrow Twangs from skeletons would make me jump out of my skin. It didn't help that there was no health regen and food didn't stack at the time.
But, No. Caves were not 'scary' for me because I "didn't know about the brightness option".
Therefor caves we're actually dark and scary!
Following your logic, horror movies should just be 2 hours of a black screen. Darkness is apparently scary.
And I think it's nicer to play with moody brightness because it makes the game look more relaxing and the torches actually appear to be emitting orange fiery light on moody brightness!
"I like the moody brightness option, therefore everybody should be forced to use it". Well, I cannot rightly repeat where I think you can shove that idea.
Christ that bright blue, bolded, italisized, comic sans @.@ WHYYY
anyway. the brightness option is useful because some computers have a darker display. so you have to make it bright. but other than that sheesh let people play the way they want.

Scary? When I was a noob, it was 1.4 beta, and I felt very lucky if I found a cave at all!
