Is a compost block that can spread to dirt such a breach of realism that is has no place in Minecraft? Those of you who still oppose it's support, ask yourself this question; if podzol spread, following the same rules as grass and mycelium, would it have any tangible impact on how you play the game?
I would be fine with a completely different spreading mechanic, or rather block creation mechanic. Then again, I've been hooked on the mechanics of renewable resource building from within Minecraft (especially limited resource maps like SkyBlock) where having some simple mechanic that could create Podzol blocks like how grass spreads would most definitely have some practical applications.
As it stands now, Podzol blocks are more rare than diamond ore blocks. That seems weird for what is just a different soil type.

I don't know if I'd go so far as to say they're more rare then diamond ore. Granted it's easier to find many diamond ores then one mega taiga biome, given the biome's general rareness.
As you said, it's just soil, and it seems to makes sense in Minecraft for the organic items/blocks to be able to regenerate. I think that if podzol required a more complex system farming more complex then just spreading to dirt, something akin to the farming set ups for wheat, or an entirely different mechanic. Maybe involving tilled soil and leaves? Either way, it'd be nice addition to the game.
Well, I dont like the fact that once its gone, its gone. It should spread but maybe only spread to dirt blocks in a mega Tiaga. So it wont spread to dirt blocks in any other Biome. This would provide a good balance and keep the Mega Tiaga Biomes looking original. Currently you find these Biomes on the larger Multiplayer Biomes and they are barren with just dirt and trees. At least give the players a way to reclaim the Biome.
Oh yes, because acidic fecal matter, soil, and decomposing leaves totally have the ability to replicate.
NO SUPPORT
Edit: Actually, I've changed my mind, how about we do this:
As long as a block of dirt has a podzol block adjacent to it, is within a chunk that has a mega taiga biome in it (because rivers) and a a SPRUCE leaves 10 blocks or less directly above it, it can turn into podzol. Otherwise no.
Thanks for re-considering, and also proposing another method of spread. Although I would suggest under your system, that the spruce leaves be within 30 blocks, as 2x2 spruce trees in the m.t biome are pretty tall, and may not have leaves closer to the ground
I get why it doesn't, but honestly, couldn't it just as easily be a layer of mostly brown colored grasses and mushrooms? I'm all for realism, until it starts to get in the way of fun. Podzol should be able to spread.
I'm actually not sure what podzol does, though. Is it a special variant of dirt block? What does it do?
The primary use of Podzol for those on survival worlds is mainly to use this block (with silk touch shovels) to make roadways rather than using some non-soil type of block. There is of course the baked dirt block now that will similarly work (a dirt block that won't spread anything), but it can be a useful block for aesthetic purposes and definitely adds some contrast to open fields.

That "baked dirt" can't be acquired in survival at all though, even with dug with a silk shovel, it's still just regular dirt once in your inventory. And there is no way to place it in survival gameplay. And as you said, most of use who support it's spread, want to use the podzol blocks as a permanent dirt path/roadway.

I thought you could get it by cooking dirt in a furnace. Hmmmm.... I'll need to look into that some more.
It doesn't really matter though. I sort of like how with some blocks you need to be much more creative and use something besides a workbench to create that block. For example, using cobblestone under a layer of water with another layer of air under those blocks to create mossy cobblestone, or doing the same thing with lava over stone bricks to create cracked bricks (something I've seen in a couple of mods). Those are the kind of thing I would love to see added to vanilla Minecraft, and my support of creating podzol is really just more of that same basic creative gameplay.

I do agree with you, more creative ways to gather blocks is something Minecraft would benefit from. I like your idea for creating mossy cobble or stonebrick. Another idea could be crafting vines and cobblestone to create mossy cobblestone. I would be totally fine with a more involved method of creating additional podzol blocks.

Podzol is supposed to be a kind of dirty grass that doesn't grow, if you want you can change the texture of grass.Edit: Changed my mind also, maybe for podzol you can put mossy cobblestone ( because it is dirty ) then dirt on top of it, support!
Wouldn't it make more sense if podzol spread only underneath the trees found in the Mega-Taiga biome? Thus, you could farm podzol by planting those trees and placing dirt blocks underneath them.
full support, kind of a small suggestions and you should have more things in this, like rare plants that grow on podzol ( maybe a rare mushroom because they grow on decomposition

Myceluim is for growing mushrooms.
Podzol is no better than grass.

This guy I can support.

Podzol is pretty much fallen leaves on mud.
It makes no sense whatsoever for it to spread.
It would be awesome if it spread onto grass/dirt blocks that were underneath natural leaf blocks, though.
