Why can't we use a torch as fuel in a furnace? "Ohh, you can use wood and coal and stuff to make things cook/smelt in a furnace, but fire? Why would you use fire to heat things up?"
One coal burns eight things in a furnace, and one stick burns half of a thing, so that eight and half divided by four, which is equivilent to 2.125, whatever that means. (I've always been bad at maths)
The point of this idea isn't to save resources, or whatever, it's if you have nothing else to burn but torches. Say you're lost at night, in cased in a tomb you created to keep yourself safe, you're starving to death and you have no fuel to cook your food with and you don't want to wast it, but you have some torches lying around. Wouldn't it be logical to burn torches to cook the meat, even if it does take a few?
It's not about going "I need to smelt something, guess I'll just craft some torches" That would be a waste of time.
It would also be useful if you have an inventory full of resources, and you wanna get rid of some space by turning coal to torches, but you don't wanna end up with no fuel for smelting things. With this idea implemented, you could save that extra space and still have fuel. Nothing serious, it would just make more sense.

That's a waste of resources. Why make a torch, put it in a furnace, and get 2 1/8 items smelted if you can get 4 times that number of items smelted for the same items. No support.
But you get four torches, so technically you have the same amount of fuel. It's just a logical sacrifice to make if you only have torches on you and no coal, light for fuel, fuel for light.

The only, and major flaw in this idea.
So you're saying sacrificing light for fuel is a waste of resources, but fuel for light isn't?
I like the idea. Maybe, as an alternative, torches, or actual fire (say, from Netherrack) could be placed under a furnace to heat it up, and/or Netherrack could be placed in a furnace? For torches, though, if this were the case, I would say it should be limited to "low-heat" (e.g., take 2-4 times as long to make charcoal, and no smelting, since smelting requires intense heat).

I don't think anyone would want to burn torches.
With such a weird number like that and only having 2 wholes items burned, people would want to just use what they were made for.
