Just wanted to say that I am so glad notch is now adding non-block type items into the game. This will give way to movable spawn points.
Simply put, beds. Each player can have one bed out at a time, this would be the players new set spawn point. Then to make up for the fact that it would be stupid to move a bed about, sleeping bags.
Beds - More permanent spawn point - Can only have one placed at a time - higher quality material in your bed gives chance to respawn with a portion of your items? - takes up a two block space (Twin sized bed)
Sleeping bag - creates a mobile spawn point for adventuring - Does not give a chance to respawn with some of your items - fast to deconstruct
Beds, once placed, would be like breaking coal/iron with a wooden pick/your hands. While sleeping bags would deconstruct in the same manner as torches and be very mobile and handy for adventures. This would also give way to allow players to no longer be tethered to the starting spawn point out of fear of losing both their house and items if they die.
If this has already been suggested I am sorry, I did a quick search and found only talk of spawn point "blocks". I am trying to be more specific in the type of block and the perks.

Still, losing it all? My precious diamond tool set, GONE?
Well, make Diamond armor and not die next time? My thought is that the player should still be punished in a way for dying.
Maybe if you make the head board out of diamond then you spawn with everything.
Another thought, you put the bed together in parts, so you have to make the frame, then the mattress, then the head board. After that you put those parts into the crafting area and there ya go, a bed. As for sleeping bag, chest blue prints only with cloth.

First, a question: Will the player respawn to the closer of the two (bed and sleeping bag) or will they have a choice.
Second, an addition to the idea: Tent, the tent would be a "public spawn point" where anyone who dies can respawn at a tent. This idea kind of depends on my question though, because players may want to spawn at their sleeping bag and end up at some random tent.
Also, make tents and sleeping bags despawn after time?
Thirdly, I would like to comment on respawning with items. With the addition of multiplayer, I'm going to say no to this. I understand your items are valuable and hard worked for however all that value goes down greatly if you remove the risk behind it. Perhaps allow an option for servers/single player where players that are more... peaceful will like it.
Note: I do not plan on grief'ing or any of that nonsense. I plan on playing on a private server with my friends and I know for a fact that the game would be interesting if we could steal from one another by creating death traps using what little we have to make traps.
I was thinking that if you have a sleeping bag out then you spawn there, but if not then you spawn at your bed.
As far as tent goes, maybe a player has to go to the tent and "use" it to set it as their spawn point.
And when I say a bed gives you the chance to respawn with some of your items I never meant ALL of them, just some of them, and you have no choice over which you keep. Maybe you will respawn with that diamond pick and sword and your freshly mined 64 stack of iron... Then again you may just spawn with 32 sticks3 64 stacks of dirt and a feather.

i dont really like the idea of a mobile spawn point. imo, have just your bed and stick with it.

Matt, seriously, stop trolling. So can you please shut the **** up and go troll the infdev forums about how much you want to get 10 bucks from your hobo house?
For a movable spawn point the way I would do it is this. 'Using' the compass on a block would create an hourglass, when the hourglass runs down that becomes your new spawn point. If you destroy the hourglass it cancels the move. If you use the compass somewhere else it refreshes and moves the hourglass to the new location. It would take a few in game days for the hourglass to run down.
I like the idea of carrying a bed around to spawn.. Maybe just spawn on top of it, and next to it if the block above it is taken. ..but if the block is completely covered, time to work in the mob spawner mechanics. ;P
Sleeping bag is not really necessary, imo.
Just a bed would be nice.
Maybe be able to place multiple beds, and when you die you respawn at a random bed, or a bed of your choice? :smile.gif:
I think redstone powered spawnportals would be just as good,Maybe if you have more than one operating at a time you have a chance of spawning in either?

I don't see how I missed the thought of this.
I like this idea more than a bed. Redstone = Magic, thus it would make more sense for those who would want the possibility to spawn with items.
..Unless, with a bed, it makes it all a "bad dream". :wink.gif:
But nah. I'd prefer a redstone portal over a bed any day. Maybe redstone + iron + 1 diamond?
Because face it, controlling your spawn point is a bit of a game breaker. You should at least need to get diamond first.

Well you don't actually sleep in them, they are just there as spawn points if you die.

Well that would tether the player to the bed and then they could not easily go on an adventure.
Why can't they take their bed with them?
Also - going on an adventure is just as easy anywhere with or without a spawn point.
Sleeping bag is not really necessary, imo.

I notice our houses look less like houses and more like empty wood blocks D:

Edit:
Maybe like that, with the flowers being redstone?
