Minecraft doesn't feel that alive to me. If birds were added, my opinion will change. Here is my idea for birds. Sorry but I couldn't add pictures mainly because I don't know how but the description can give a good picture.
Bird Species and info:
Hawk:
The second most common bird, spawns plains/forest/snow biomes. Non-hostile. Drops specific hawk feathers and has 5 hearts. Slightly bigger than a chicken.
Glider:
The rarest of them all, 75% rarer than wolves and spawns in plains biome and is fully brown with a black head.. This is 3 blocks high and 4 block wide. Tamable by right clicking a stack of seeds on it. To be able to fly, you must craft the saddle (first two rows of leather, bottom row with ink sacs). It can fly with the exact same mechanic of normal player flying. The Glider can attack enemies controlled by the rider by swooping (holding shift). Drops a Mega Feather which can be turned into 10 brown wool when put in the crafting box.
Raven:
Spawns in the Nether, is black and has red eyes. It is as common as ghasts, making them take 2 and a half hearts worth of damage per swoop. You can deflect the swoops by whacking them by left clicking. Deflecting with a sword does no damage to them or you, the Raven will just fly away and prepare for another swoop. This Raven is hostile and is as big as a chicken. They usually spawn in Nether Fortresses but can also be found just on plain Netherack ground on occasion. This bird will have 4 hearts losing 1 heart per whack.
Crow:
Spawns in forest biomes. They are as big as a chicken and they usually fly from tree to tree and makes nests that are made of a bunch of stick put into a nest shape in 1 of 5 trees. They drop black feathers which can be used to craft black wool by putting 9 of them in the crafting box. They make the same old crow sound as in real life which can be hard from 18 blocks away. Yes, they are noisy birds. They are usually active in dawn and dusk when they are either waking up from the night (In dawn, obviously) or going back to their tree at dusk to sleep. They will lay 3 to 7 eggs in the middle of Spring (When the seasons come of course) and hatching at late Spring. So expect to see baby crows at that time. If you touch or go 2 blocks near the crow's nest, they will attack you by swooping. This will have the same mechanic as Ravens.
Swans:
They spawn in lakes. A bit larger than a chicken and they are fully black with a red beak. They have the same mating system as villagers, except instead of 1 baby for every house, it is 1 baby for every 4x4 square in the water of the lake. They drop black feathers and they have 6 hearts.
Blackbird:
Works exactly like a crow but makes different noises and has a different appearance. They can be kept as pets. You tame them by using seeds and they will suddenly start to fly with you. Before you keep them as pets, you can either have a cage or give them 'branches'. Cages are 1 block wide and 2 blocks high. Here is the crafting recipe:
Iron Bar Iron Bar Iron bar
Iron Bar Trapdoor Iron Bar
Stone Slab Stone Slab Stone Slab
The cage will look like of what it is in the crafting recipe. If you open the trapdoor, your tamed bird/s will automatically fly in it. If you leave the door open for 10 seconds they will fly out and not be able to automatically go in again, unless given 5 seeds of any type. If you want your birds to be able to fly and have space, you can add branches. Branches are just stick that can be added by right clicking a block where you want it to be. The birds will move from one branch to another. In order to mate, they must be given a nesting box. Here is the crafting recipe:
Wood Plank Empty Wood Plank
Wood Plank Wood Plank Wood Plank
Wood Plank Wood Plank Wood Plank
You can look inside the nest box and see how the eggs are going in the nest which is automatically put in the box once crafted.
So that's it for now. Please post your opinions below!
yes...its pretty detailed and nice, but i think it would be putting to many birds in minecraft, mabey ravens can be zombie pigmens pet and crows ae nice, but for the rest after that minecraft should be called birdcraft

I like the idea of having birds, and this isn't vague at all!(if you haven't learned yet, hearing that from me is a compliment). The only thing I don't like is have the glider. If you did get one, it would make the game way to easy. And don't say that it is very rare. Though I have not been on here the longest, I know that is an excuse. But besides the glider, this is awesome! Support +1!
I must admit the Glider is pretty overpowered, so here is my idea to make them not so overpowered. The Glider still has the same rareness but to fly it you must put a super-saddle on it. here is how you craft them:
Obsidian Obsidian Obsidian
Blaze Rod Emerald Blaze Rod
Obsidian Obsidian Obsidian
Before you put the saddle on, you must tame it by feeding it diamonds (takes up from 20 to 64 diamonds to fully tame). Once it is tamed, you can put a leash on it. It has the same mechanic as horse leashes, but must be tied on Netherbrick Fences, not normal ones. Also, the Glder cannot attack, so it is used as air transportation.
I think you should only add one or two birds. The "songbird" mob and perhaps a "bird of prey" mob.

Sheesh! Who in the world would waste that many diamonds?
Hawks would be nice. A hostile bird.
