Im rather fed up with rain on minecraft, its way too loud! This should be a big priority on mojangs to-do-list for minecraft because lets face it, we all hate minecraft's rain. Not only is it loud, it prevents mobs from burning during day, constantly occurs most days, creates charged creepers if it's a thunderstorm (normal creepers are annoying enough in vanilla), and the noise penetrates through your shelter! Rain needs a huge nerf, and now!
No. just no. We want minecraft to be more realistic, not less. getting rid of a helpful feature that has been in the game pretty much forever. Plus, rain does all this good stuff:
It does not solidify lava or put out torches, but it does put out fires,[3] except those on netherrack.[4]
Mobs on fire will be put out on contact with rain; this prevents skeletons and zombies from burning in daylight.

turn down your sound
+ Charged creepers = Extra caution when venturing in the rain.

1. How exactly is preventing mobs from burning up in the sunlight helpful? The answer: ITS NOT!
2. I play only multiplayer, fire-spread is off on most survival servers.
3:What are the odds that your overworld portal will land you in a netherfortress? Blazes don't spawn anywhere else in the nether, plus you can disable or break their spawners. Did I mention spawn-eggs are only available in creative with the core game?
4. Wolfs shaking themselves dry? That isn't helpful, its just eye candy, big flipping deal.
Endermen teleporting in rain? Do you know how many times that has scared the crap out of me, or was just plain annoying?
5. The problem isnt your volume level, its the volume of the rain itself!
6. Theres something called irrigation, and it affects up to eight blocks away, small farms supply plenty of food for one person anyway!
I wouldn't mind being able to control the weather volume separate from other sounds, but that is it. I would also say it can be a little too common. Other than that, I like rain. The OP really overstepped his bounds saying that nobody likes it. The things that he thinks are bad (excluding the noise and frequency) I think are good. Heaven forbid we have a tiny additional challenge during rainstorms.

I am looking at the replies and let me just say I am disappointed.
Let me evaluate this:
First, rain is useless. All it does is fill up cauldrons, which would only be useful in the nether where you can't use source blocks. Uh-oh, it doesn't rain in the nether!
Second, it's annoying. It is loud, it makes the skies dark and makes it hard to see, it makes endermen teleport which is awful if you are hunting endermen, it kills snow golems, and puts out burning zombies and skeletons.
Third, why should I have to turn down my sound? Why should I have to get optifine? I shouldn't have to do ANYTHING, it's a problem, and should be solved instead of being "patched" by other solutions.
Fourth, pasta is correct. You can't use /toggledownfall in multiplayer.
And pwngwin? Minecraft isn't about realism, it's about gameplay. You don't see floating rods of burning magic metal that shoots fireballs at you in real life, do you?
I don't agree with nerfing rain AT ALL! This is completely idiotic (just being honest). Rain is the way it is because its realistic. In real life you can hear rain from inside your house. In real life rain is loud. Also it doesn't matter if mobs don't burn when it rains (just kill them yourself, or stay inside). The chances of a charged creeper being created from lightning is rare! 100% no support!!
Minecraft isnt about realism, do you see floating trees irl? No! Sure, I agree that the charged creeper isnt that big of a deal. But I shouldn't have to turn my sound down to make almost everything else in the game near impossible to hear because of a single constantly-occuring game mechanic! Also, completely idiotic? Look at your avatar!
I don't think they accidentally made rain put out ignited mobs, because, you know, it's... intended. I could go for a small volume change but nothing beyond that. Rain is a decent thing that adds a bit of atmosphere.

2. I play only multiplayer, fire-spread is off on most survival servers. Good for you.
3:What are the odds that your overworld portal will land you in a netherfortress? Probably higher than you think, I have spawned in nether fortresses many times.
Blazes don't spawn anywhere else in the nether, plus you can disable or break their spawners. They can fly to your nether portal if it is close and if you spawn in a fortress they can easily access it there.
Did I mention spawn-eggs are only available in creative with the core game? Not until now.
4. Wolfs shaking themselves dry? That isn't helpful, its just eye candy, big flipping deal. Good, aesthetics are good.
Endermen teleporting in rain? Do you know how many times that has scared the crap out of me, or was just plain annoying? Sounds like a personal problem, and you contradict yourself here. You say rain is bad because it spawns mobs, but good because it gets rid of endermen.
5. The problem isnt your volume level, its the volume of the rain itself! If you want rain quieter just turn down your volume. Problem solved.
6. Theres something called irrigation, and it affects up to eight blocks away, small farms supply plenty of food for one person anyway! This is just an added feature, that helps you farm a lot faster and quicker. plus it helps if you accidental stomp the soil.
I prefer to live in biomes that have grass, thank you very much... I'm very picky about which biomes I move to I'll have you know!
Without rain your lovely grass wouldnt be there , therefore you gotta deal with the rain, simple as that. And as many people has stated, its perfectly fine as it is , if you hate it do much and are playing multiplayer , i repeat what i said , change the biome where you live.
If you don't like rain because it's annoying, turn off your sounds or get optifine.
Rains are useful for me because they keep endermans away.

There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers what the Universe is for, it will be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable.
If your to scared of a few mobs to go out in the rain. Stay indoors and cry.
Turn down your sound.
I'm not scared of them, its because they can be an extreme nuisance at times like when you are herding a cow into your pen, and its too stupid to notice the darn wheat, then BOOM rain comes and a zombie starts attacking you, which is plain annoying. I don't want to have to turn down the global volume, I just want to be able to turn down the sound of the rain alone!

It's you, you're not cautious, if you know that will happen then don't go outside when it's raining. If you don't want mobs when raining or not go live in a mushroom island.

That argument is completely invalid for multiplayer...
