This is a relatively simple suggestion, but I think that if you couldn't 'hear' a player at longer distances, it would be a lot better for raids and the like. For example, Jimbob McKebab is about 128 blocks away from me. Should I really be able to hear him?
What if my pals want to find him, kill him, and pillage his house?
It would be a disaster if he could hear us!

yea i support this idea maybe even making a button
to make it that u can only hear normal talking and
shouting but no whispering or the other way around
to prevent spammers orrr even better make the
"shout" ability be limited for atleast some time
for that player after using it?
Basically, it should be as follows:
Whispering can only be heard within 3 blocks.
Talking can be heard within 64 blocks.
Shouting can be heard within 172 blocks.
If you want to hear it from further away, you need some way to amplify it...

In indev, I (hope) that something is done to prevent direct communication between players that are way-far apart.
Some sort of "Pony Express" would work for long-distance communication, but it'd be so slow.
Though radios don't fit perfectly in with the theme, they would add tons to the game - here's how I envision it:
First off, NO VOICE CHAT. I don't think anybody likes listening to whiny little children's voices, and that's pretty much all you'll be hearing in MineCraft.
Chat messages would be more transparent based on how far away you are from the speaker. To add neat effect, capital letters would stay visible at slightly larger distances than lowercase. At about 30 meters, the other person's text would not show up at all.
Instead of a chatbox, messages would appear in a more unique way. When someone says something, the message will show up in a direction of the screen that coordinates with the speaker's location. For example, right in front of you and it'd show on the top of the screen. To your left, it'd be on the left. This would also make the illusion of background chatter when you're in a crowd.
The two forms of long-range communication would be mail and radios. Mail would be simple - there'd be a note item that you can write on (and then optionally lock, so nobody can change what it says) and give it and some valuables to the local mailman, who would then make his delivery. Paper would be easy to craft - just use one plank and you'd get 2 sheets out of it.
Radios would be a pain to craft, but would be absolutely useful. They should require resources that would typically take an entire community to gather - a diamond block, some iron blocks, some glass and some flint, perhaps. This would also make it beneficial to be a member of a large community. It'd be extremely difficult for a loner to get the resources.
How would they work? When you use the radio, you'd enter a "channel". If you can guess your enemies' channels, then you could even listen in on their conversations. You would enter a message, but your name would not be shown. Your messages would be viewable by every other radio on this channel. Messages on the radio would last only for a time, then they'd be gone. This way you can't go on the radio and read some sort of a log. Also, radio communication would be effective for about 500 meters, but if you have another radio on your same channel at 400, then you'll be able to communicate also with a radio on the same channel that's over the distance limit of the original if it's within 500 of the second radio.
Especially when infdev is the big thing, you'll really need to communicate like this.
Frankly, I want to play with friends. It just makes sense to allow us to communicate with each other without having to run third-party programs in the background, swapping between different windows in the middle of trying to build stuff.
Pretty much all multiplayer games have made systems allowing people to communicate with one another. The more versatile and easily controlled it is, the more successful it has been.
Also, again, chatblocking systems deal with whiny voices pretty quick.
And... Radios? Really? Are you serious? Electronic equipment?

I like the idea, but you should have different levels of speech.
i.e. whisper, talk, shout.
I think I remember that topic... Didn't everyone FREAK OUT, or was that the one about having an ingame teamspeak thing?
But yea, the idea sounds good.
Not everyone uses that, and not everyone's in the same channel.
