Now that Minecraft is more popular and generally more awesome, maybe Notch should add gamepad support. Not everyone prefers a gamepad, but, for example, younger/older (ancient) players may be able to play Minecraft when they usually wouldn't due to a lack of skill. So - the gamepad. Xbox 360 controller - easily connectible, ergonomically awesome, and white (I'm not racist).
Now, to the controls.
Right Trigger - Delete
Left Trigger - Place
Right Bumper - ?
Left Bumper- ?
A - Jump (duh)
B - ?
X - ?
Y - Block inventory (Creative) or Inventory (Infdev/Indev)
Dpad - Block change
Right stick - Look
Left stick - Move
Start - Menu
Back - Fog setting
Now you see there are a lot of question marks. These are things that I generally couldn't think of a general use - either I am too stupid to realize, or there are just features Notch hasn't added yet.
I am open to suggestions and let me know what you think.
Sorry for the bump, but I agree with the OP. I just started using my Xbox 360 controller through Xpadder and its a great set up. I do agree that it would be better if there was official gamepad support built in than using third party programs.
My set up is:
Right Trigger - Delete
Left Trigger - Place
Right Bumper - scroll right on item bar
Left Bumper - scroll left on item bar
Y - Esc/Menu
X - Inventory
B - Toggled Jump(I use this for swimming across lakes)
A - Normal Jump
Left Analog - Moving
Right Analog - Camera
Of course it would probably be better to stick menu on the start button, but I'm used to Square Enix games and the triangle button being menus.
The setup I use is comfortable and more convenient than the keyboard and mouse.

How did you set up cycling through items
How did you set up camera as right stick
I have a Logitech F310 (would have gotten an xb but meh) and it's pretty fun to just play around with. Don't use a gamepad if you're a serious builder/fighter, though.
Here's my setup (JoyToKey):
Left Stick: Movement
Right Stick: Camera
Left Trigger: Place
Right Trigger: Delete
Left Bumper: Sneak
Right Bumper: Sneak
just so you know, it is possible to use a dualshock 3 [ps3 controller] with pc or mac, no need for adapter. just connect it via usb to mini usb cable issued with ps3 controller to pair it and go. in mac the drivers are all there already, in windos I dont know. still looking fo a keybinder for game pads in mac, but anyone with a ps3 controller at hand could give a quick try with this tip :wink.gif:
I would like to see some native game-pad support for Minecraft. I like game-pads for when I want to kick back and relax when playing a game instead of keeping my arms up and hands attached to a mouse and keyboard.
Most other indie games I have played include game-pad support. (Cave Story and Spelunky for example). xpadder is a quality third party program to get that sort of functionality but unfortunately the new versions that support windows 7 cost $10.
Ultimately... I would like to see native game-pad support.
edit: Sorry, I didn't realize I was posting in such an old thread!
Left Joystick: Move
Right Joystick: Aim/mouse
A: Destroy/Left Mouse
B: Place/Use/Right Mouse
Y: Drop
X: Jump
Start: Esc/Menu
Select: Inventory
D-Pad any key: seems redundant for minecraft imo so fog.
Right Trigger: Hotbar Scroll right
Left Trigger: Hotbar Scroll left
That's about it. Seems simple. Am I missing anything? When I get a controller, I'll test it out. I think i'll like it.
Edit: Jump!
The problem with all of these methods is that there's no comfortable way to perform inventory management with a gamepad. This game only uses mouse-driven menus -- they don't work with a keyboard, much less a controller. There would need to be a mod that implemented controller support for that sort of thing before this is really usable.
I'll agree a controller isn't the most ideal thing for minecraft but hey I have a big TV I can hook my computer up to and I'd like to be able to play Minecraft on it and be able to sit back and not have to put a keyboard/mouse on a TV tray.
using the right stick as your mouse inventory isn't that hard to manage, but this is really more of just a curiousity to play around with for me, at least until I get used to it. it's bloody fun with a big screen tv, but I still don't know if it's practical.
I would love to see native gamepad support. Mapping keys to buttons is just not the same. For example, when I'm playing in game, I want to be able to place blocks with left trigger (right mouse) and destroy with right trigger (left mouse). But when I walk up to a chest, I'd like to open it with A (on xbox 360 controller) and close it with B, which overlaps with the triggers. This is just an example, but gamepads require buttons that dynamically change function depending on the situation in game.
More to the point, Minecraft is being ported to the Xbox 360. Which is controlled by a gamepad. Is it possible to implement this support into the PC version? Maybe they can easily port it across or something.

So you want it to be... overly complicated? Instead of having one button that is equal to right click, which is used to place blocks, activate levers, and open furnaces or chests, you want to use two buttons for it. Why?
Also, Xpadder or Joy2Key is much better because then you get Macro support (at least with Xpadder you do). If you know how to use it properly you can use the leftover buttons from a 360 controller to do some cool things like a quicksave button, auto clicker (for combat), an auto swimmer, even a button for auto running.
Also, at least when you necrobumped you contributed new info.

Necro does not exist on the suggestions forum. Feel free to necro old threads if they are not outdated with game patches. How much is contributed also does not really matter.
i use a ps2 controller instead of xbox so the keys should be configurable if puts it in
edit: also native vibration would be excellent
That would be kind of cool. I personally only like vibration on shooters, but if I play a shooter I'm on a keyboard and mouse anyways lol. Love that precision.
I would assume that it would be configurable to any kind of gamepad that has proper drivers. Without drivers, you'd be anyways.

I was just sitting here in bed, with my netbook (watching night gallery on Hulu) and saw my gamepad, thinking "I wish I could run minecraft with my gamepad, I could tend my mob grinder and rack up my supplies of mob drops while sitting here in bed"... I've managed to get a very decent framerate on my lil netbook using reduced graphics settings and the web-client, but the keyboard is so cramped, and the touchpad is so alien to me (I'm an oldschool mouse user).
I've always assumed that the USB XBox and PS3 controllers were just "using the USB Connector" and were not actually USB devices that computers could comprehend. I guess that comes from decades of game and compiter systems using very similar connectors, but not being on the same standards. I'll have to look into this.
Definitely try out Joy2Key or Xpadder. The only problem is no one has been able to get the little plugin keyboards that go on Xbox controllers to work properly. That would be nice. Full gamepad control plus full chat support.

I haven't used it for Minecraft yet, but check out this tool. The PS3 controller is actually detected by windows when plugged in via a USB cable. It even installs a basic driver. Motioninjoy allows more advanced configuration AND includes full drivers for the DualShock 3 controller. Vibration, analog detection, all of it. Thanks to this tool, I play Just Cause 2 on my PC with the DualShock 3. It even has support for using the PS3 controller as an Xbox Gamepad. It translates all the mappings for you, and best of all, it's totally free :biggrin.gif:
