Please remove the requirement of giving out Personal information to play the minecraft demo.
I wanted to have my brother try minecraft so I wanted to make him a account. I have not done this since Alpha. Now I find that Personal information is required to play the demo of the game. I don't give my information to sample food at the store. so I'm not having him give Personal information to demo a game!
SRY!
EDIT!!!
For anyone who registered during Alpha / early beta ALL the info you know about registering a account is OUT OF DATE! Click register or the "Play the Demo" buttons BEFORE posting!
What do you mean personal information? If you're talking about registering an account, that's just your email address, and almost everything on the internet requires it. Are you sure you're using the minecraft website? Or are you just being confused by the snooper feature? Make this more clear please.
To all of you people who think Notch is still working on the game, he stopped working on Minecraft in late 2011. Get your facts straight and stop spamming his twitter about Minecraft updates.
Umm... What information are you talking about? Email? Umm..... Just about every service on the internet requires email? It needs the email to contact you if you purchase it, so it can tell you if the transaction worked or not, that kind of thing.
Even for the downloaded version, if it's a demo, then it's a demo, a stripped-down version of the game that is freely distributed to anyone so that they can try the game before they buy it. You shouldn't need to put in anything to get that, even "just" your email. I've played a lot of demos and shareware, and I can't think of any other company that makes you input anything in order to play one.
To do so you MUST give personal information when registering. When I registered in Alpha we did not have that. When I registered there were 3 things to fill. Name / password / e-mail. And the e-mail was not verified all other info like full name / dob was not needed until you actually made a purchase. Now you need all of this just to play the demo.
We did not have to do any of this to play demo versions of any game for as long as I can remember! So now what??? If someone registers a account with all this info and decides they don't like the game now there is a name someone who wants the game cannot use because it already taken by someone who wanted to try the game and did not buy it.

Cough, Steam, cough.
I don't quite see the problem, though. If your personal information is really that private, register a new e-mail account just for Minecraft. Problem solved.
E-mail: Expected, many websites don't even let you comment without it, if you need to create a new one, it's free.
Password: Also expected, make up a password.
Do you want to receive info: Just don't check this
Firs/Last name + date of birth: LIE
Security questions: LIE
To expect anything less than this is absurd, they only want people with a Mojang account to download Minecraft, that is there right. You give more info to post on this forum than to get a MC account. Also: LIE, the form doesn't know if the info you give is real, make up a fake name and be born whatever day you want.
Or just fill out the dang form and stop worrying about it, Mojang is not going to use that info in a nefarious way, and nobody is going to find your name on there and use it for ill, there are probably hundreds of people with the exact same name. "Personal info" is such a bogus fear, the only info you need to protect would be passwords, SSN (or similar), credit card #'s, bank account #'s, and other financial info.
As for the MC username, the client now needs a name to work right since it runs an internal server, thus you must have a name.
The security questions are NOT so they can come pear through your window. They are incase you forget your password it can verify its you and let you reset it. Think for five seconds before talking.

Yeah, that is a very valid point. No email=no way to reset password. No way to reset password=Tons of duplicate demo accounts. Tons of duplicate demo accounts=CONFUSION.
Oh, they did change the registration proces... However, Mojang is NOT the only company to do this. If you want to play a demo of a steam game, you need to give personal info to make a steam account. Same thing works with Mojang. Want to play demo of a mojang game, you make a mojang account.
That's quite different, actually. You aren't signing up for the demos. The demos available through Steam are just part of the much larger service, and its really just allowing you to try products that you would need that service to use anyway. What you're really signing up for the service as a whole, which includes access to forums, access to many free to play online games, trading of in-game content for numerous games, access to user-created content through Steam Workshop, access to various exclusive offers through the Steam Marketplace, as well as a voice and text chat chat client - all of which does justify registration.
Comparing registration for Steam to demos as a whole is like saying that because wholesale market X has sample booths, and you need to fill out an application and pay a membership fee to shop there, that you should have to pay a fee and fill out an application to try the samples at other less-exclusive markets as well, even though they don't offer all the other services that wholesale market X provides.

You are aware that giving false personal information on an online form is illegal in some countries, yes? The United States, for instance. Using falsified information on an online form in the USA is a violation of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act. This is a federal offence, and yes, people have been arrested for it.

Ever get tired of squids? Support dolphins in Minecraft!
Yeah, but that would be an in browser play, which wouldn't give everyone their full simulation of playing the full downloaded version.

I support gas pockets in MC (see thread in Suggestions)!

Seriosuly. The only personal info is the name and birthdate requirement!
