Makes it so that diamonds would have to be plentiful for the hammer to be worthwhile. It needs to be heavy on the craft in a sense. while 4 stone is easy to get, same with iron, diamond would have to be in well stock.
hehe, such a cool idea, i had to post. :biggrin.gif:

I wish block damage could be saved.
That would enable use of siege weapons, bombs, ranged wall attacks. Etc.
To be used it hypothetical PVP action. As the walls would degrade. Etc.
+1!

Sorry for the massive(?) bump, but I had an idea for these, and I didn't want to make a thread and getting the "already posted" excuse.
Maybe if you hold down the mouse button, then it would charge up. What's so great about charging up? Well, if you aim towards a block while doing it, it sends out a shockwave, sometimes dropping saplings from nearby trees, stunning nearby enemies, and breaking some blocks. The longer you charge up, the better the swing is.
If you aim towards a mob (or a player :3), using a charged swing would send the mob flying. If you time it right with a Creeper, you could send him into the sky then he explodes. Mob baseball?
The consequence would be that it uses up a pretty good chunk of the tool's durability. Maybe a wooden hammer would break after 2 fully-charged swings.
"It's like baseball, except with a giant spider and a sword instead of a ball and a bat!" ~X
That is an awesome idea. But I think the charge swing should be right click and have a quick swing be left click. That way if you mine with it you don't charge it.
But sadly, these two ideas, despite not being related, don't fit together.
I think the hammer shouldn't have a weak attacking swing at all, but rather a repairing swing.
Left Clicking would be a giant wind-up swing that utterly devastates (too strong?) blocks and mobs, while
Right Clicking would repair blocks that have been damaged. Of course, this would only work if block damage was saved. But how it would work would be:
The block that was a is now damaged and is a . well if there was another item implemented in the game, like putty or cement or something, right clicking that would consume 1 putty or cement and make it a . just an idea. :tongue.gif:
This is brilliant. So hammers would mine/dig/chop at the speed a specialised counterpart would, with the same durability, but wouldn't leave a drop. Also, hammers would knock back mobs a lot. Awesome!

Iron would be interchangable.
Your hammer idea is great, maybe if it destroys stone or cobblestone, it won't drop anything. But maybe if it destroys solid creation, ittle drop something.
I just got my mom to tweet notch about this suggestion! I really hope he sees it! It is one of my favorite suggestions! And I feel it could use to be seen so I don't care I am bumping it to say this. I can see this being the next great tool in minecraft! Because who would not want to be able to easily shove monsters off cliffs!

To sum up all the stated (and mine) suggestion:
1) All-around tool for mining/digging/chopping blocks, with a better durability, and lesser speed (comparing to corresponding tools of the same quality).
Durability and resource cost should be thoroughly balanced howether, otherwise it could be more feasible to make a bunch of the corresponding tool (like, for OP's recipe you'll need hammer to be >9 times durable as shovel, since hammer would require 9x diamond as a shovel does).
2) Same as above + weapon with a better damage, lesser speed, increased knockback.
3) Fast tool for block removing which would not yield any items from destroyed blocks.
Significantly faster than corresponding tools of the same quality. I hardly picture a hammer as a fast and low-damage weapon, so i suppose it should not count as weapon and it's durability should decrease if used on mobs.
4) Same as the above + an ingredient for some kind of repair block.
5) Standalone weapon (unsuitable for using on blocks) - slow, powerful and with an increased knockback.
Could be used together with all variants but 2nd for obvious reasons.
6) Repair tool for other used tools.
Minecraft currently doesn't allow to use one items on other and i can't picture it either, but that's why i suggested number 4.
If there are no more suggestions than this could be made into a poll (if OP is still interested).
Hmm, I could see hammers as being a new tool, though that particular pattern is already used for shovels, might I suggest using a 3 stick handle, with the material of choice on each side like a T?

:smile.gif:
That way the longer handle could be make it more of a sledgehammer. Also personally I hated having that one odd stick out when making a set of tools from the 1 being used on sword :tongue.gif:. As for your shattering, would that mean the hammer would destroy the block outright in one swing? It would make sense with sledgehammers, though to make it so its not a pickaxe replacement I would say to make it not leave behind a block to pick up, since you could say the thing was crushed. Perhaps to balance out the extra durability a slower swing or cooldown could be implemented? Or perhaps if the hammer's material is below the target, say wood vs iron, or stone vs diamond, it would have no effect, but still lose durability.
Not trying to hijack your suggestion or anything, just attempting to flesh out the idea as it is playing in my head.

It's funny you should mention that. There's a mod called Equivalent Exchange (an alchemy mod) which has a dark matter hammer made using that pattern, except with diamond in place of sticks. The dark matter hammer doesn't shatter all blocks instantly, but it does break obsidian as fast as a wooden axe cuts trees (that's pretty fast for obsidian).

I like the idea of a hammer that can 1-hit destroy lesser materials, similar to how you break blocks in creative.
So say a wooden one would only be useful on sand and gravel, plus fragile stuff like glass, ice, and snow blocks.
stone can handle all that plus dirt, clay, and sandstone.
iron can handle all that plus the stones/bricks.
gold can handle those plus ores.
diamond can handle just about everything.
I would suggest using solid blocks as the OP did, but 2 rather than 1, so 3 sticks up the middle and a solid block on either side of the top stick. Having something that could 1-shot obsidian ought to cost a lot to make, with 18 diamonds being a reasonable price. For regular clearing use, an iron one that can handle most common stuff would be dead simple to get two solid iron blocks for. I like having the iron not able to break ore, so you don't accidentally break ore while using the hammer on your average clearing jobs.
I would agree that the durability should be high and that hammers should never leave behind blocks, they wreck everything they hit and are able to destroy.
For fighting, I would suggest they are slow, with a delay between hits, there is already code in place to make tools act differently when you are looking at a mob, so I think it should be easy to make this work like a normal tool on blocks, but a slow heavy hit when you are looking at a mob. Should do a bit more damage than a sword and give a slightly better knock back, but counteracted by the slower attack speed so they generally balance out. That way it comes down to preferred play style, and not using one over the other because it is more powerful.
[Edit: The one thing I think diamond hammers shouldn't one shot are spawners, just because you should have to be in risk near one till you lock the place down with torches and can free yourself to properly break the spawner as is already the case. Oh, and they shouldn't break bedrock either obviously.]

1) That's would be the shovel.
2) Normally you would use Planks.
3) Normally you would use cobblestone.
Yeah, they don't need to be more powerful, just more choice.

It wouldn't be a shovel because it doesn't use planks and cobblestone, and uses iron/gold/diamond blocks instead of iron/gold ingots and diamonds
