Besides the multiple times I've been mining in a mountain biome only for a silverfish block to release it's cargo and carry us both to the lava below (sigh), they really don't have a use, either good or bad. I've thought up a couple ideas already.
1. You can mine a silverfish block with a silk touch pick. Great for traps both offline & online, as breaking one would cause all the others to break. Basically a disappearing floor without the obvious pressure plate & sand fall trap. Plus, they make portable XP, just like mining diamond/emerald/lapis/coal ore.
2. Perhaps they could drop something? Even if it's something from another mob, such as a slimeball, it would still make them more lively.
3. I was thinking of a generated "Silverfish Nest", with a few silverfish spawners or having them naturally spawn in the area, with maybe a couple traps & a chest at the end.
4. Increase how fast they come out of their blocks. Not overly fast, say, every 100-200 ticks (5-10 seconds) they have a chance to come out in a 16 block radius?
5.A "queen" silverfish? I've always been for adding variations on mobs, like the cave spider, so I figure a much larger silverfish, maybe cow sized, with more health & damage, with a decent speed, randomly generating in mountain biome caves would be a fun challenge. Especially if normal silverfish spawned around it as a form of mobile spawner.
Anyway, these were just a couple of glaring ideas I had for them. Feel free to add your own ideas.

Hmmm. . . I am liking the sound of this queen silverfish thingy. (WE NEED MORE ARTHROPODS!!! RIGHT!?!?!)
A common idea is to add a drop to them, the drop will be a crafting material for chain mail armor. As the textures of the mob and armor are somewhat similar.
I think Silverfish are underused thus far into MC. i would be impressed to see many more uses of them
*Edit* Since most mapmakers use either Creative mode or a third party proggy to set things up, i think Silk touch would be useful IF you had a way to STOP the spawning
