Though we have shown an edit of the code can do it now...... so .... eh?

Saddly I would exspect them to just milk this cash cow dry before they consider changing anything.

That seems like the ever-growing trend of corporate business... but let's not be too deterred by their greed. Perhaps a second wind could get the suggestion going again? (Although I have no idea what to do exactly, talking about it is a good start)

The other problem I see is that with infinite depth. Don't get me wrong, I love the idea, but unfortunately infinite underground is not viable. The existing oregen method would still work just fine with infinite depth, just after a certain depth you'd get the nether, and then... who knowsand it would allow much greater flexibility when it comes to underground generation. if all else fails, one could always add a bedrock layer to the bottom. you'd still be able to build underneath, so in that sense there would no longer be a 'void' per se, but generation would still work fine. I really like the idea of an infinite build limit, or even an infinite nether.Despite the various hurdles, however, it would be well worth it for the FPS increase and drastically increased (if not infinite) depth/build limit this would bring.
Awesome Minecraft mod! clicky!
I like Cubic Chunks primarily because of the creative aspects of it. A very high world ceiling is very appealing to the creation of huge towers, skyscrapers, and very tall modern building. That and adventure maps.

The main reason I thought up the idea in the first place was trying to find an answer to the problem of the sea level only being at 60 blocks high.
I found this unexceptionable......
I want oceans 250+ blocks or more deep!!!!! And STILL have room under them for mining and the like.
I want towers that touch the sky, and mountains so high the tops are far beyond view!!!
Stacking chunks just wouldn't work with the way many people had suggested, so I thought of changing the chunks to the 32x32x32 (same size as the old chunks just cubic). Lighting data from the bottom layer of every chunk saved onto the top layer of the chunk bellow.
About all that's changed sense then is that I've let some one with better communication skills than me take over the OP, and it's changed to 16x16x16 chunks because they work with the current chunk system. Making 32x32x32 chunks is darn near imposable with out a re-write of the code. Cutting the current chunks into 16x16x16 is and has been done with mods.
I can't wait till there is a stable one with deep deep oceans and massive mountains programed into it. My dream will finally come true and a vast undersea city will be built!!!! hehehe
I also can't wait to see the first working 100,000 ~ 500,000 some block high 1:1 scale space elevator. >.> Yah I'm a geek like that.

16x16x16 is not only a better way to do it, it will be less laggy and faster than the 16x16x256 chunks. My orginal idea of changing to 32x32x32 would have been REALLY hard to do, but cutting the 16x16x256 into 16 pices stacked up on top of eachother is and has been done.
I came up with 3d chunks about 5~10 months into alpha....and we have been working out the kinks out of it. The past year sense Calacbolg took over the whole PR thing from me it's really taken off and there have been a lot of programers working the math.
We really have the kinks worked out on this suggestion. Full with proofs of concepts and nearly a full on working mod.

Thanks for listening if you did, and sorry if I'm just bugging you with info and suggestions that have already been posted here. Thanks again!
So...make Minecraft more like Terraria by removing the concept of dimensions?
I think this would be a bad idea in terms of compatibility and gameplay. While it would certainly be cool, there are a lot of potential problems. For example, how would you get into the Nether safely, since water would (should) still evaporate (which would look really glitchy even when it isn't), and there's no double-jump mechanics of any kind in Minecraft? Is it really worth going up and down 2000 blocks just for some quartz, ghast tears, or blaze rods? What about other dimensions, like the End and dimensions added by mods? What about the risk of a stray ghast or blaze exiting to the overworld? What about all the redstone mechanics that involve the nether being a separate dimension? This massive change might force focus on exploration into the priority, and put complex systems that make Minecraft so dynamic into the background. The gameplay style it would encourage would alienate the modding world from vanilla players, possibly forcing them to almost separate games.
There are many ideas that would otherwise be very good and interesting in Minecraft, but can have a profound negative effect on other mechanics and Minecraft's unique dynamic appeal, which makes the game work so well for everyone. This idea is one of them.
Nonetheless, your idea should really be put on its own thread, with a link to this thread to make note that they are connected and yours depends on this one.
After a short break from working on Tall Worlds Mod to finish some work on my Ships Mod, I'll get right back to work on Tall Words. So stay tuned for updates.
As always, you can also discuss Tall Worlds Mod (ie, the implementation of cubic chunks, rather than the proposal of cubic chunks) in its own thread on Minecraft Forums.
No I think the idea is a grate Idea as a world gen option
And y-axis biomes would be nice
