I think with the infusion of recipes that will inevitably flood in after the Plugin-API Update that it is finally time to add an official in-game guide to crafting, smelting, brewing, etc. Some mods that have done this include Risagumi's Recipe Book, Craft Guide, and Not Enough Items (some use this one just for this feature). It should be able to auto-update just like these do. The problem is figuring a good crafting recipe and look for it. I think the recipe should be all Books filling the 3x3 Crafting Table grid and should either resemble an extra thick book or a glowing bookshelf to represent the many volumes that would constitute it. It should also have a search option like in Creative and should have a menu that would have "chapters" for the different item creation types.

If regular is Vanilla then what flavor is your Minecraft?
I think it should be more rare. Perhaps like this: 1st Row: Book|Book|Book| 2nd Row: Book|Diamond|Book| 3rd: Same as first. Like it? PS: My minecraft is neopolitan.
I think the Minecraft Wiki already does this job, and would be a waste of time to implement and then constantly update when one convenient wiki is right around the corner. Something like this is useful but not worthy of vanilla.

Hey, you there. Yes, you! Are you thinking about posting a suggestion on the forums anytime soon? If so, please read this before doing so.
Why in the world would it be a craftable items? It's essentially just a game guide... I'd prefer just an option on the main menu to see all the crafting recipes and other info... Why craft something to learn how to craft things?
It can be something as simple as a search button in the crafting table that let you pick the item you want to craft and then you can see the items you need in the grid with high opacity, letting you know what you need to put in each slot.

Even better idea is to have it in the options menu so you could view it from the pause screen. That is even better than the mods.

Too OP. Ehen I was a n00b, I enjoyed discovering all the content of this new awesome game. It felt like I was crafting it MYSELF. Don't take that away for people. Let them have fun with crafting, or look it up on the wiki.

If you want a response, quote me.
I have too slow an internet connection to be a lurk. If I wate time opening the page, I might as well reply.
Yes. Yes I do.
Humanity is the creation of Logic and Emotion, Calculation and Imagination, Cold Analysis and Blind Faith. This is why I believe it is a strange Human that would prize one while shunning the other. For a calculator can do math just as well as you, but a calculator can not use math to make the world a better place.
You'd still need a very good computer to look things up while you play. I guess Minecraft is helping the economy by encouraging the sales of high-end models. "But can it handle my Minecraft?"
I see we independently came up with a similar concept and the exact same name. We must think alike. Unfortunately the search function is imperfect and the forum is as buggy as the game is for me. Consider this a merger.

I'm using an Acer laptop, a 2010 model I believe. I typically run a heavily modded MC launcher running Skype-often with a large call, Steam, Firefox (usually having several tabs open). I easily can open the Minecraft Wiki from my browser while having all of these open on the side. I'm not sure what you're running to have this issue, but you might want to consider an upgrade.

Hence my statement about high-end computers. Actually, I'm sort of a sponge for this kind of information and will only look stuff up if it has special rules or is really complicated (not much like that in Vanilla yet at least).

Respectfully, I completely disagree. No other game that I play makes you search the internet just to do something utterly basic and necessary to the game. Making or collecting recipes then adding them you your crafting books would be a great way to add an ongoing adventure to the game.

Please actually read posts before responding, so you don't end up looking stewped.

I actually fully agree there. That's well said. But still, I can't even fathom Mojang making the effort to do that because there's more than enough wiki's and tutorials out there. To Mojang, that could be like adding a single grain of salt to your french fries for better taste. Chances are, that single grain might end up falling off your fries anyway.
