I've noticed small modded servers get no attention, but is there a way to possibly update minecraft in a way that allows people to connect without mods? It seems scattered the way I say it, but it'd make a decent addition to minecraft. Although it is probably impossible, I would still like to see it done if possible. This would expand by far the number of players both on small modded servers and larger ones.
Something similar IS possible and IS planned, with the Mod API update. It will not allow you to connect without mods, but it will probably back up your .minecraft folder, install the mods, and connect. When you leave it will hopefully revert to the older folder. Anyway, Mojang has this planned but keeps procrastinating. As soon as it's added EVERY suggestion here about making texture packs/mods/whatevers easier to install will be redundant.

Kk thanks for the info. Mods/Texture Packs and stuff are easy enough to install, atleast to me, but some people have trouble with that stuff. The coming Mod API update is gonna solve all that from what I would guess.

Agreed. Sometimes it's hard if you're trying to make a ton of mods work without incompatibility issues though.
I've always thought that Minecraft servers should work like Gmod... when you join the server, a loading bar appears and installs the required addons. Think of the possibilities! Support.

Not mods, but plugins. Those will actually be installed on a per-world and per-server basis, and downloaded from a secure, official Mojang repository. So it would automatically install all authenticated plugins used by the server, and adjust your connection settings so those plugins are activated when joining the server, without messing with any of your other servers or worlds. There would be no need for a revert, as the plugins wouldn't do a thing unless activated (e.g. you set a world/server to make use of that plugin).
And Mojang's not procrastinating; they're still in the planning stages. Grumm's still actively patrolling the MC-API JIRA (he's the head of the API itself), and trust me, this is not the sort of thing you rush headfirst into. They need to know exactly what the API will need to support, for the most part, before they can safely begin coding - it's like that for any major software project. Better to set things straight now than waste hours reworking it later.
EDIT: For a comparison, that last paragraph is exactly the reason Dinnerbone and co. decided to create Bukkit from scratch instead of reviving hMod.

Okay, thanks. I was a bit confused with it. It's just that it was announced about a year before, and little progress has been announced. Now can we please leave this fairly redundant thread to die? And even if they are called plugins, they are still technically mods.
There is the upcoming Mod API which has already been mentioned, though I still think it's somewhat of a questionable implementation due to how long it could take. It isn't necessarily a negative to have it, in fact it can only be a neutral at worst, but for some people it could take hours to download the mods necessary to connect to the server.
