Motivation: Minecraft (for me at least) is about conquering your world. You add structure and light and build zones of safety. But an unnoticed dark corner, even in an otherwise sealed immaculate area allows monsters to spawn. What if you want a dimly lit garden for midnight strolls? Its time consuming to even ascertain if a particular block is going to spawn monsters (count distance from all the nearby light sources).
I have two related suggestions. First, Lapis Glasses, that allow you to see if a block is sufficiently lit (minus the sun) to stop monster spawning. Second, the Lapis Orb, a holy totem that stops monster spawning in a certain area regardless of light level.
Lapis Glasses:
Lapis Glasses can also be found rarely in dungeon chests.
When you are holding the glasses you can right click to put them on. All nearby blocks (maybe 100x100x100) will have there tops tinted red if monsters can spawn there and tinted blue if monsters cannot spawn. This does not take into account light from the sun, since that's transient.
Lapis Orb:
Lapis Orbs can rarely be found in dungeon chests.
Lapis Orbs are totems that prevent monsters from spawning in an area (11x11x7) centered on the orb. Its not a light source, it can be buried or displayed, its effect works regardless.
Questions:
Is the Orb over powered?
I don't think so, but feel free to comment. Torches stop monster spawning and are easy to make. The orb is far harder to make resource wise. Torches and glowstone will probably continue being the lead ways to stop monster spawning. However, for some custom builds, the orb would be a great option. Especially since it can be hidden in walls.
Is having an "orb" anti-minecraft?
I think an orb would be some sort of holy symbol. I like the idea, but I'm not set on it. If anyone has suggestions on how to improve, I will listen. Its the functionality I care about.
Why do we need the glasses if we can just count distances to light blocks?
The glasses would be necessary to see the effect of the orb. But more importantly, it would free players to make more creative structures in less time. Players could put on the glasses, tour their buildings, and be confident they are monster proof. It would also show new players who find them in chests the explicit limit of torches and other light sources.
How do the glasses work?
Well they could be programmed a number of ways. I was thinking the top texture of the blocks would be tinted when rendered, similiar to how biomes tint grass. The tint would be very noticable, and it would be red or blue depending on if monsters could spawn.
Edit 2/2/13:
Changed "gold" and "lapis" to "gold ingot" and "lapis dye" because that's what I meant. This might be overpowered (as mentioned below), but feel free to discuss. Remember, you can light a huge area with torches easily- it just looks really bad.
Added the "How do the glasses work" question.
Edit 2/3/13:
Added crafting pictures. Changed the spawn protection of the Orb to 11x11x7.
Well, you didn't suggest Lapis tools and armor, so that's a good start. I'm not seeing how the glasses are so important when you can simply notice the lighting itself. Same with the orb, you can just see the lighting itself and know that a monster shouldn't spawn there. If you're unsure, you can just keep placing lights.
So...keeping specific areas dark for ambient purposes...that I like.
The glasses have "I love to be lazy" written on them as well.
Overall I like the idea, but finding 36 Gold Ingots-worth in one chest may be overdoing it. I still support it.
I really like see ideas, but I think that both of them should require Eyes of Ender, just so they are harder to get and because it would also make sense. I think that the eye should be out inbetween the two dyed for the goggles, and the reason that they'd be used for the goggles would be because the Eye of Ender would be able pick up on things we can't see. The Eye should be used in the orb because it is pretty much a magical orb already, and you would just be adding lapis and gold to enhance it to the point of usability.
Minecraft needs an orb. But I think one made of just Lapis is too overpowered, especially since you get a lot in one ore, and the protection radius is big.
How about diamond in the middle, wood slab in the bottom edge, lapis in the remaining three edges, and a new item which is related to anti-mobs?
Now it would look like a non-light-producing orb with a glowing Diamond inside a Lapis orb on a wooden plate?
Also, since the 'new item' should relate to anti-mob spawning, but should not be a loght source since it does not have light...has to be a natural anti-mob. Such as Mushroom Island biomes. Mooshrooms dont have a drop only they have, mushrooms are too common and giant mushroom blocks and mycelium could work. (Myceliums require a Mushroom Island and Silk Touch which makes this hard to get while Mushroom Blocks can be obtained with Skeletons and Mushrooms, though still require Silk Touch)
Maybe, you could
1. Craft the Mushroom Spore block you got using Silk Touch on a Giant Mushroom into this 'anti-mob item' or
2. Craft the Mycelium into Mycelium Root
If choice one, then the orb would look like it would have some Mushroom Spores on a Lapis Orb with a Diamond inside
If choice two, then the orb would have roots (Sounds more awesome to me)
Edit: Did not see the crafting recipe (Derp.) But hey, I did present a good suggestion to the topic right? And gives more sense.
YES! This is a very good lapis thread (Compared to the idiots who post about lapis tools -.- ).
I see very much use in this, but maybe make the orb a bit more expensive (Since lapis isn't to hard to get)?
The orb will stop mobs from spawning, but it will still let mobs walk into their radius right?
This is actually a VERY good idea. I hereby promise to champion this thread, and make sure it doesn't die! (I heard something about championing a thread in the critics sticky post...)
Difference is the orb is more powerful because it stops mob spawning altogether instead of by light level. Mobs can spawn roughly 8 blocks from a torch. However, they can't spawn until 15 blocks away from this. Also, the torch works only on a flat area and doesn't work below but this does a 15x15x15 area so it works through the floor. I think it should be reduced to 10x10x10 at most.
Mobs can spawn 8 blocks from a torch, so it protects a diamond area of 7+1+7 (15) in length and width. But since its a diamond its only half as many blocks as a square... so like (15x15)/2...
Okay, I don't want these to replace torches. I'm thinking 11x11x7 protection area (needs to be odd since its centered on the block). I don't want to lower the values too much because it will become harder to hide enough of them to protect a decent size area.
Editted original post.
I'm also open to adding something more expensive to the middle of the orb. I'll think about it

Oh, you meant non-blocks?
Whoops...never mind on my post about blocks then....
This would now be quite cheap to make considering how useful it is.
Something of higher value would need to be added to balance it....

Yea, again maybe a diamond in the center to balance it out a bit?

I would reccomend a diamond in the center of the orb though, since as of now its a fairly cheap recipe and pretty powerful.

Yea thats a good point...

Sweet. We shall all now have a use for lapis!!!

I hate to have ANOTHER use for diamond. I want lapis to be the limiting factor in the recipe, so that people have a reason to collect lapis.
Mabye?
Or
Or as suggested
Also, would this be over-powered if it stopped zombie sieges as well? Maybe only on easy?
What about a non-light emitting block that stops mob spawning? Or an item that allows you to see what areas are well enough lit to prevent monsters?
I choose lapis because its relatively unused. But the functionality is primarily what I want.
People, the orb doesn't raise the light level, but prevents mobs from spawning, so you can have a dim room without light and still have no mobs in it.
Well, its good as decor... but I think it should have another use, and this is a pretty well thought out idea in my opinion.
Sure...what if I say these two words: Nether Quartz.
