I was just thinking this same thing, there should be entire chunks of just open space and water, and continents every once in a while, there is just much too much land in the maps right now. Idk about the depth though, I mean, after a certain distance you'll die long before you reach the bottom, so it'd be pretty much unnecesary I'd think, though if we had diving suits of some kind. . .
Oceans taking up giant chunks would be great. even better would be if a spontaneous island were to erupt up from the depths. I'm thinking along the lines of a indev island in the middle of the ocean.
Also, ocean chunks could have floating islands spawn rarely in them. These little gems in the sea would give reason to explore, and act as landmarks to other continents.
If we are going to be able to build large ships, we need large, i.e., several thousand square mile oceans. Imgine not knowing how far the ocean stretched and setting off in a ship to explore.
I spawned on an island with a 8 drop to the water - that i tried to reach the bottom of and drowned tryin to come back up because I wasnt paying attention to my air ><

This is minecraft, a game put on the earth so we can make pickaxes and mine holes through logic itself.
Like big ones. Big enough so if you were in the middle of it, you couldn't see land, and they go DEEP.
We need biomes and MOAR DEPTH.

A simple suggestion on geology here.

Slaves of the Coal Mine
An interesting Novel to pass the time.
Although, those were just big lakes.
They asked me how well I understood theoretical physics. I told them I had a theoretical degree in physics. They said welcome aboard.
They lacked depth, and had strange walls of obsidian running across them.
I did like that
and the obsidian was just to mark the center of the map, so that's not a real concern.
I find it rather likely that we will get maritime transportation soon.

Bumping the most important suggestion in this topic.
It's no fun having the roof of my underwater base a few meters below the water level.
Please.
