I've seen a couple of mods that have tools that smelt the blocks they harvest into their smelted forms. Two examples I know are Thaumcraft 2's Pick of the Core and the Twilight Forest's Fiery Iron Pickaxe. When Fire Aspect was able to be added to an axe funtionally that really got me thinking. How about making this option official? There would of course be some ups and downs, so here's some balance points.
Advantages:
1. Allows you to trade durability for fuel.
2. Quicker in the end.
3. Could be suppressed by holding shift or another key.
4. Could have a cool particle effect added, such as Furnace fire particles.
Disadvantages:
1. Accidents do happen.
2. You wouldn't get XP for doing this.
3. Could be made tool specific so you don't just spam pickaxes.
4. Getting Fire Aspect (either level) on an Enchanted Book could take a lot of tries and levels.

If regular is Vanilla then what flavor is your Minecraft?
How about it comes in tiers! It is like fortune for iron / gold but it also smelts it for you, so you can't duplicate. It shouldn't be possible to get on pickaxes with SilkTouch and Fortune, it should also not work on regular ores.
It could be on any tier but at the cost of durability. If ore is mined and ingots are received, it will deplete durability faster. I would say a decrease of 5 durability. That way, it wouldn't be OP.
If mined stone, it has similar effect to Silk Touch since cobblestone is placed in furnace to get smooth stone.

And stone, and sand, and clay, and wood, etc. I like this idea.
It does? Now I'm starting to think this is OP.
That would make it less OP.
Depends on how it's balanced. If you take this as smelting with tools, then yes, it would.
