Crying Obsidian was going to be added and Jeb has stated that he may add it after the texture files are expanded. It was originally going to be crafted from Obsidian and Lapiz Lazuli and resemble Obsidian, but with a blue texture on it resembling a blue version of the moss on Moss Stone. Its purpose was going to be to reset your spawn point like how Beds do now, but without passing the night and could be used regardless of time. We need this for the Redstone Update for several reasons.
1. It allows you to spawn into a different dimension or stay in your current one.
2. It allows you to reset your spawn point in the Nether and End in a way that ignores time, and thus won't explode.
3. It makes Lapiz Lazuli more valuable and respected.
4. It could work in new dimension mods to help you stay where you want to.
5. If I'm on a server asking for Lapiz as payment for something you may know why.
Please ask Jeb to go for it when they do the texture file updating!

Acually crying? Now there's a thought! You could even click on it with a Bucket or Water Bottle! Please remember that this was originally Jeb and Notch's idea. I agree that it could make an awesome foyer to walk through!

I was thinking about the brewing thing, kind of like being able to brew in the nether without having to use cauldrons. The crying obsidian is basically an infinite cauldron, just with a different look
Since they're officially adding parts of Railcraft maybe it could be the official "World Anchor" instead? That would allow for awesome automatic farms and Minecarts going over the horizon at the cost of a bit more processing power. The future boost in the game engine might compensate a bit, but it would always be a tricky choice to make.

So, it's basically a bed but can be used in the Nether and is much harder to get?
I would say No Support, but i support the crying obsidian block itself, either as just decoration or maybe even an enchanting or alchemy thing?
I like how you think,Using it for "upgrading" the enchantment table?Alchemy,Yes.
Potion of Blue Skin?Potion of Obsidian Skin?
Blue Skin would make you last longer in water, such as having a invisible aqua helmet?Resperation of course.
Obsidian Skin....Hmmm... 45%- less damage taken from explosives? No Knockback from explosives?
And as a decorational block,it would emit a faint blue light, emits small blue ender-like partices
For Crafting,it would be used for smelting,One Piece of Crying Obsidian = 4 C.O ingots.
Used for crafting a sword, but mainly other things, since the new Redstone update will add new items, and new crafting recepies.
I like the idea of the block being added, but I'm not sure about the functions you listed.
Admittedly, it would be a post-diamond item.
Partial support.
I don't like the function at all. That is why we have command blocks (Thank you NitrogenSnow for mentioning that) and beds. I like the idea of it being a nice aesthetic block with a dripping water effect on all sides. (except the top)

Command Blocks are awesome, but not included in straight Survival. Their awesomeness seriously incourages the use of cheats. Perhaps Crying Obsidian could be used for some other game altering function such as controlling the weather or time of day. With the Redstone Update coming up it could be controlled with a Redstone signal for many function ideas. The big idea is just brainstorming now before whatever it's used for winds up being a let down.

I'd like crying obsidian as a decorative, and possibly as a function block, but only if the recipe (if there'd be one, otherwise don't make it obscenely hard to get) isn't obscenely expensive (ie multiple diamonds to craft). I'd mainly use it as decoration, but a dual-purpose block (think bookshelves) is generally a cool thing.

(This only applies when it is 1 block away from water since the recipe is lapis, not water)

I'd support it if it were just decorative.
Also, it's spelled Lapis.
