I was thinking about the brewing thing, kind of like being able to brew in the nether without having to use cauldrons. The crying obsidian is basically an infinite cauldron, just with a different look
I think that would be a much better idea the a spawning block.
How about it not only being an infinite Cauldron, but speeding up and enhancing brewing? Perhaps having one near could allow you to both extend and empower the potion at the same time? Maybe it could increase the maximum level of the potion like how Bookshelves boost an Enchantment Table (but more logical and controlled)? Super-charged potion effects have been around in the code for a while and it's basically how an Enchanted Golden Apple gives you Regeneration 4.

No support. If you put your crying obsidian in the nether, and then a ghast blows out your portal with its fire ball, and you dont have a flint and steel.....Well. Good luck. You cant escape the nether. I mean, yes, you could just destroy the block and then commit suicide, but dieing to leave is never acceptable.

Well, you could go to a fortress and kill one wither skeleton and get a piece of coal, kill a blaze and craft blaze powder, kill a ghast and get gunpowder and make a fire charge to light your portal.

We have other ideas to. Just follow along in our lively brainstorming. It was originally Jeb's and Notch's idea and will eventually be added after they improve the rendering engine (they may even make it flow). We're just pondering what to do with it when it arrives.

I don't support the block as a spawning tool, as beds have been added, and we don't need another one to interfere with beds. However, I support the crying obsidian block, and do agree as to the fact that it would make lapis lazuli more valuable. Partial Support.
For those of you that support crying obsidian, make the same signature as me, I'm starting a campaign for it's release.

Regardless of whether or not it is functional when added you can't deny one thing. It makes a really cool achievement banner!
