I would like to have something harmful while I mine. I would enjoy the danger, and there are pretty straight-forward ways to enduce death with natural chemicals. I have picked out two naturally occurring elements that are... hazardous to our health.
Bromine (Br)
Bromine is a liquid at room temperature. So, you could find some bromine condensate on rocks randomly throughout mines. As a liquid, bromine easily evaporates and the vapor becomes toxic. When you break the rocks with Bromine Condensate, the air around becomes thick with the toxins. However, bromine can also be found in salts. As such, it could be used in a variety of ways as a weapon as well. Bromine is corrosive to human tissue in a liquid state. Bromine vapors are very toxic with inhalation. Humans can absorb organic bromines through the skin, with food and during breathing. Organic bromines are widely used as sprays to kill insects and, in this case, creepers.
Lithium (Li)
Lithium is extremely flammable. Many reactions may cause fire or explosion, including heat, pressure, or contact with water. Lithium gives off irritating or toxic fumes in a fire. Lithium has a constant risk of fire and explosion on contact with combustible substances. Not only is it dangerous to be around, it explodes.
Lithium could also be used as a weapon after mining it from ore.. if you survive. It would be nice to use in arrows against those ivy bastards, as they're clearly filled with water.
I'm not really suggesting that both of these should be put in, these are just examples of the properties of hazardous materials that are found in mines naturally.
I would prefer Bromine to Lithium, though :tongue.gif:
People have mentioned gas-pockets, and there's rumors of smoke, these things would be an excelent example of hazards, and you're right, I do think they'd add to the game. I personally would find the chance of cave-ins interesting as well, which I know has been discussed.
Why not methane? It probably makes more sense to find methane pockets in a cave than bromine or lithium, and it's more easily recognizable as a threat to someone unfamiliar with chemistry (wet rocks or silvery ore don't seem as dangerous as a mysterious gas). Plus it can suffocate you and explode at the same time.
...and please don't flame me to death saying that we would have random explosions due to cows releasing methane. That's just patently stupid.

Though I agree with people above; methane and other noxious gasses are a common problem in tunneling; wether it be for mining or construction. I'd also like to add another suggestion apart from methane gas and volatile ores:

Alchemy seems more 'in game' than complex modern-day chemnistry; but I heartily support any clever challenges besides monsters!
I'm just saying that there should be an ore that hurts you, maybe one that looks like diamond, but is really explosive when you mine it.

... and utterly hilarious.

Burning coal deposits:

You cannot see air through the diamond ore you're excitedly mining.
And this would introduce another necessary element... Canaries! in cages.
Getting yourself killed is a pretty damn sure way to prove that something is lethal..
