Really, I think the anvil needs a fixed amount of used. Because I just repaired 3 pieces of unenchanted diamond armor with one diamond per piece of armor and the dang thing broke. This is very annoying and I think that either the Anvil should decrease in durability more consistently or have a fixed amount of repairs before breaking.
When you use an object, sometimes something goes wrong and it breaks. This is different from it degrading over time through continuous but correct, use. But besides that, I think the chance of breaking should be decreased for lower quality materials, but increased for higher quality ones. Maybe have more stages with a higher chance of damage, so it would average out better, but other than that, I don't know.

Agreed. I have to really think if I need a repair I want on something because of the seemingly random usage of the Anvil.
