I have no idea how Notch will implement spawn points but if he'll allow people to set their spawn anywhere just like in creative, how about adding a block or something that lets you choose your own spawn point?
Such as being able to craft a bed or something. If you die, you "resurrect" or "wake up" in your bed, which you'd naturally place inside your house. You'd still lose all your items but you wouldn't have to worry anymore about respawning somewhere in the wilderness in the middle of the night after dying.
This would also contribute to making furniture useful, other than just decoration.

Yep, Notch is adding something like this. I'm not sure I like that it's a bed in this case because jerks could destroy it and force you to restart at the default spot. I'm hoping spawn points won't be visible to anyone but their owners.

I'm guessing it would be an indestructible flag, so that way it can't block players but they can't remove it either. Although, I do like the invisible thing too, seeing as if someone saw a spawn point, they might be an ass and decide to make a pit straight to the lava under it.

there should be an option to have it like riverworld so you spawn randomly wherever ppl have explored before. would make dieing suck more (a good thing) and with torches eventually going to burn out your fort/house/castle would fill with monsters and become a dungon for other players. (assuming you couldnt find it again.)
If its an indestructible flag, whats to stop them from building a wall with a few of them? Anything indestructible leads to problems.
"Flag" implies a non-solid object you could simply walk through, like a torch. So it wouldn't make a very good wall.
Also, I honestly doubt Notch is going to allow infinite claim flags... you could claim the entire world without ever building on it just to annoy the other players.
