Since entities now pass through portals/gates and Dinnerbone wants to add more fishing content I suddenly had the idea that it would be awesome if you could fish through portals/gates. When you hear the sound of want you want pull! This could work on mobs from the other dimension and maybe include mobs and items that only come from portals/gates. Mobs could be strange creatures that guard dimensions or just be an easier way to find an Enderman when you need one. As for items? Other than the urge to say Enderfish I can't think of any right now. Other portal/gate fishing ideas?
Probably one of the most creative suggestions I've ever seen. However, I don't exactly agree with these new mobs being pulled out, because it doesn't make much sense that this medium length fishing line can pull in new mobs while they never even existed when you yourself would enter the same portal you're fishing from.
For example: When a player enters a Nether/End portal, he/she goes from "Point A" to "Point B". This fishing line however, would go from "Point A" to a completely different "Point B" that only the fishing line can reach that the player can't. Know what I mean? It's hard to explain.

Maybe they could be monsters that normally run and hide from you when you are normally in the nether, so you never see them, maybe?
All good thoughts on this. I really like the idea of portal/gate fishing though and can see what you mean as well. I really like the point of "maybe they're just hiding?" Fishing in an Enderportal? Wait for the Enderman's sound and pull for a fight! Fishing in a Nether Portal? Maybe you can finally fetch that rare Magma Cube? Pull on a Ghast and pay the consequences! Even without new mobs or items I could see spending a whole Fishing Pole on this easily. Mods would have to be determined on a case by case basis on whether or not their portal is fishable if they add a dimension or new mobs in a dimension. It would be an interesting idea if instead of it being just any mob from the dimension's list that certain ones would be fishable while others were not. That could easily oblige the player to actually go in if they want to fight something special such as the new Wither Skeleton ("No free Wither Skulls").
If we could see what was on the other side of the portal, I would support. But since we can't see the other side of the portal, then I dont support. But your creativity does deserve acknowledgement.
In Thaumcraft 2 you can see through the special portals that Seals can make. Maybe you could talk to Azanor about that? It's already a very interesting and complex mod, but you also have to be a lot more mindful of your environment at all times.
