This idea is a little bit of a strange one. I believe we should be able to ride around one spider similarly to how we can ride on pigs. As expected, you would be able to scale wall while riding one.
Spiders are an aggresive mob. As such, it's expected that they'd be very hard to taime. The biggest problem is that during the night spiders will attack you, and you can't tame them while they're agro'd, so you'll have to tame them while avoiding detection. This is an especialy hard feet to pull off, since spiders can see you through blocks. The proper way to tame a spider is by leaving any raw meat on the ground near it. You need to do this during the night, because this is when spiders hunt, so they won't be very hungry during the day. Hopefully, the spider will see the meat and begin to chow down. If you lucky, you should see a heart appear over it's head. When this happens, the spider is considered neutral for a while, and won't attack you unless you attack it. If you hold out any raw meat while the spider is like this, then it will slowly approach you, until it's close enough to snatch the meat from your hand and eat it. Every time it takes meat from you and eats, there's a chance that hearts will appear over it's head, and it becomes tamed.
The spider, now agnoliging you as an easy source of food, will follow you around, unless you right click on it to make it sit. You can now place a saddle on the spider, and if you hold out any raw meat (or perhaps some kind of "porkchop on a stick" item), you can steer it the same way you steer a pig using a carrot on a stick.
Cave spiders can also be tamed, but attempting to tame them is also more dangerous. You can't place saddles on them however, as they are far to small to ride.
Thank you for taking your time to read this, please keep in mind that this suggestion is subject to change if enough people agree/disagree on something, or if I feel this needs to be modified.

I'll think about making a banner, but unfortunately I haven't actualy looked into how to make one. I'll try though, and I also might throw in a few pictures to ilustrate the idea! No one here would happen to know how to make a banner would they? I'd be most grateful if someone could tell me.
And thanks for your support! I'm always nervous when I make suggestions, because I'm afraid that people might not like them. So It means a great deal to me that you like this idea.

Maybe have the spider also go faster at night, like 6-7blocks per second, and slightly slower during the day, at 4.5 blocks per sec. That would make spiders a good night transport, while pigs would still be the best day transport.

That seems like the kind of suggestion that should come only after this is implemented first (that is if this idea will ever be put into the game in the first place. *crosses fingers*) One thing at a time.

I'd have to say no, the dead can ride spiders. We ride living bacon farms.
Well, essentially this. Bad guys (skeletons) ride bad guy mounts (spiders), good guys (you) ride good guy mounts (pigs), that's simple logic. You don't need to ride a spider, it's rather silly and pointless, and accomplishes nothing that pigs cannot do (except climbing up walls, but even that isn't useful enough to merit adding this).
Now hold on a minute. What in the game implies that only the hostile mobs should be aloud to ride spiders? Is there anything wrong with having an arachnid for a pet? Isn't the whole point of Minecraft that there are no real rules or boundries, that you can choose your own path? (Under a reasonable limit of course. Being able to tame ghasts or creepers would be kind of silly.)
And I think being able to climb on walls is far more usefull than you think. You could climb your way out of a ravine after a day of spelunking, or scale over the walls of an enemy fortress while playing PvP. And not everything has to be entirely practical. Wool blocks can be coloured, but are a rather weal building material, and item frames only serve decorational purpose. Isn't it okay if someone wanted to ride a spider for aesthetic reasons?

I support this idea, especially with piggies now being ride-able! Who cares if we got pigs now, more variety the better! We already had bread and such so adding more would work well, especially for how free you can be in Minecraft.
Add a saddle and feed them cocoa beans or something, then you just ride them off somewhere. That should be simple and vanilla'ish for MC.

The only rules and boundaries are logic. Evil-looking guys logically ride evil-looking mounts, and you don't see an evil ork riding a pretty pink pony, nor do you see the knight in golden armor riding a skeleton horse. And like I said, it would look silly and serve no real purpose.

The ravine situation would be entirely unpractical. Any spider you brought down manually would likely take lots of fall damage and possibly wander off, assuming it survived in the first place, and it would be incredibly difficult to find and tame a new one to reach the top of the ravine. Climbing over walls in PvP kind of destroys the point in having walls in the first place, don't you think?
As for aesthetics, I really don't see any value to be brought out by it. It wouldn't look "cool" or "scary-epic", it would look rather silly and absurd. If you don't believe me, use the mount command in SPC to try it out, then hit F5 and tell me how it looks.

Actually, wool tends to be fairly useful for complicated redstone builds, as you can use it to "label" which wires do what. And I find items frames to be a bit more user friendly than signs for some controls, like putting a cookie next to a button that gives you a cookie when pressed. And that's not even counting what you can do with maps.
You won't believe how many orcs I see riding pink ponies, or valiant nights riding undead horses. Basing boundries on logic alone horribly limtis what we could do with our imagination, which is a real shame. And who says the player is a good guy anyway? You could play Minecraft pretending to be the villain if you wanted, and that's the real beuty of it.
And part of the point of this is it can climb up and over things. A player who tames a spider can scale up any wall they want. However, there are still ways for players to spider-proof their walls. But part of the reason why I spider is hard to tame is because it's a very usefull mount. If you don't want your spider dead, be carefull.
And don't dare say riding on a pig is any less ridiculous an idea than riding on a spider. Have you tried riding on a pig in real life? Well you'd look stupid doing it. In fact, every aspect of Minecraft is a bit ridiculous. The game is an entire world made of blocks for god sakes. And don't on whatever thay duck thing is.

I support, and I may make you a banner later on, any suggestions on what you want it to look like?
Neospecter mentioned a mod for mounts. If you could use that to take a screenshot of Steve riding a spider, and place the words "Spider Mounts" on the side, that would be good. Maybe the screenshot could be taken during the nightime? You could also put "Why should spider jockies have all the fun?" on the bottom of the banner, if that's all right. Thanks for offering this, I truly appreciate it!

No, there has never, ever been a sandbox game with a story or ending... except Grand Theft Auto... and Saints Row... and Red Dead Redemption... and Crack Down... and Assassins Creed...
Darn, I can't seem to find that post, but I'll try to make one that looks good enough...
EDIT: It's done, click here to get it, hope you like it! (Is it good for a 12 year old?)
Looks good! Thanks, I'll see if I can't figure this out so I can attach a link to the post onto the banner. When the banner comes, so will a few pics I drew for the suggestion as well.

You have a surprisingly solid idea here. I think that you should steer the spider the same way as the pig. Just craft a piece of rotten flesh onto the fishing rod instead of a carrot. The only thing I disagree with is the ability to tame cave spiders.

Understandable, I was iffy on that myself. If enough people think I should, then I'm willing to change the suggestion to exclude cave spiders.

I personally think that Spiders, Pigs, Cows, Sheep, and wolves should have a variable to define a humanoid rider. That way we can code in custom riders. Just imagine a villager riding around on a cow, a zombie riding around on a pig, a baby villager riding on a doggie.
