A very straightforward suggestion: Beacons (blocks introduced in the 12w32a snapshot) should be able to give negative effects as well as the positive effects they currently bestow.
This would benefit the game in at least two ways: it would allow Adventure Map makers to be even more creative than they already are, and it would also allow Survival players to set up challenges for themselves.
(Special thanks to Brinjal66 for the mockup of a Negative Beacon's GUI!)
How would these beacons be constructed? Well, the current positive beacons are built on happy shiny blocks like gold and emerald, so perhaps Nether blocks (like Netherrack or Soul Sand) could inflict negative effects. However, Nether blocks are fairly common and inexpensive, so an alternative would be to use the current blocks in a different configuration. Perhaps upside-down pyramids. Or perhaps something completely different, so long as each Effect level requires the same number of blocks as the positive beacons do.
So why would anybody ever want to build beacons that would hinder them? Well, makers of Adventure Maps could make use of these beacons in order to create a feeling of skill growth. At the beginning of a map, the players would be afflicted by various debuffs to make them seem inexperienced. As they progress in the map, the negative effects would be lessened or removed. Finally, near the end of the quest, the players would be exposed to the positive beacons we've already seen, making them seem to have honed their skills to perfection!
The negative beacons could also be used to add flavour to certain areas in Adventure Maps. Say at one point the story has players venture into an area where dangerous biological weapons had been used. A beacon effect that slowly drained their health would make what was just a part of the background story into a legitimate threat.
And these negative beacons wouldn't necessarily be completely useless in Survival Mode, either. A complaint that is common enough is that Minecraft can often be rather easy. With negative beacons, players who wanted to challenge themselves could build these debuffing pyramids and then play with whatever handicaps they want!
Or the beacons could be used for more specific "challenges". Competitions to see who could, for example, defeat the Ender Dragon while under the Weakness effect. Or how long can you last after summoning the Wither when you're under the effects of a Slowness beacon?
I would very much like to hear any feedback you might have on this idea, and I'm sure the forum-goers can come up with more uses for beacons that inflict curses, rather than bestowing blessings. Please, share your thoughts below!
Sounds nice. Makes nuclear apocalapse maps more 'nuclear' with random areas with high radiation, and give things like slowness, weakness and poison.

Or, if you wanted to protect your chests on a Factions server, just set up a negative beacon with poison! Might deter people from trying to steal...
Also, I just realized something awesome! You can actually toggle beacons! You can set up a sticky piston to either push or pull the block the beacon is resting on, and hook it up to your door! This way, you can remove the poison to access your chest!

Generation 25: The first time you see this, copy and paste it into your signature and add 1 to the generation number. Social experiment.
Thanks again for the support!
And thank you, Squidfather, for pointing out another use for negative beacons. I knew I could count on folks to be creative!
This is will be a great edition! It can be set up as a trap to players in Multiplayer AND adventure maps, unless the beam is red instead of blue, they will most likely think it will give them positive effects instead of negative effects, untill they get what they wanted...

I do imagine they would have the same beam of light as the positive beacons. (Ultimately, though, that will be up to Mojang.)
But there's another good use you brought up. A rival faction is investigating the beam of light rising into the sky to see if it will give them a blessing. Little do they know, it's actually a curse beacon you set up. Once they realize they've been debilitated by the beacon, your team (who had been hiding nearby, but out of range of the effect) springs out and finishes them off! Take that, blue team scum!!
...I may have gotten caught up in the moment there...
As you can see, we're missing curse equivalents for Resistance and Jump Boost. Other negative effects already in game are Hunger (or food poisoning as it's known), Blindness, and Nausea. I don't really feel any of these fit as counters to Resistance or Jump Boost.
And so we must create some.
A Resistance opposite is simple enough. Let's call it Vulnerability. Anyone affected by that effect will take more damage from all attacks or injuries.
But Jump Boost is trickier. I don't think preventing people from jumping would be very fair, but I can't think of anything else that would be equivalent.
Any thoughts on what the Curse counterpart to Jump Boost should be?
^
Jump Boost is one of the effects given by the beneficial beacons we currently have. Since all the other positive beacon effects can be easily 'flipped' to make negative ones, I was trying to brainstorm an opposite to Jump Boost but I can't find anything satisfactory.
Total support, but instead of a light beam to the sky, bad beacons should make a red tinge in the air.

When will Minecraft stop updating? When pigs fly over the frozen plains of hell, twice in a blue moon, while Taylor Swift sings a song called, "Maybe I'm the Problem".
jump prevention comes to mind. it would sure be annoying to not be able to climb a single step...
also, while reading i had the impression of INVERTED pyramids to cause these effects.
I don't really feel too good about jump prevention, but it's what my mind keeps going back to. I think it may be too annoying or prohibitive.
I do quite like the inverted pyramids idea. Would the Beacon block itself still be on the point (which is now the bottom) or the center of the "base" (which would now be the top)? I'm not sure which I like better.
prehaps just have blindness/nausea as the opposite of resistance (as it will make you get hit more because you cant see) and hunger as the opposite of jump boost as then you will get hungry and wont be able to sprint therefore meaning you cannot sprintjump
I somewhat considered putting Nausea as the counter to Jump Boost just because, but I decided against it since it was too random.
Resistance was easy to invert though, so I think the "Vulnerability" effect is the way to go on that one.
Why should it be nerfed? If anything, it needs to be buffed. It's only usable in a relatively short range, and the steps needed to get what is really just a minor buff is so time-consuming that it's hardly worth it at all.

I think you're misunderstanding. This isn't about nerfing the current beacons, it's about adding a second set of effects that will hinder players within range instead of helping them.

Fits perfectly into Vanilla Minecraft

That's a decent idea. I don't really have too much of a preference as to how the Beacons look, I'm just focusing on how they would perform.
