The Aether is a popular mod for many reasons and also fits well with the overall themes of Minecraft. Many aspects of it are also frequent suggestions otherwise and some of its features have already been added into Minecraft. For those not familiar with the Aether mod it would be a nice idea to look it up in the mods section of the wiki and look up some of the "Let's Play" series on Youtube about the Aether mod in Minecraft. The concept of the Sky Dimension could easily be fullfilled with this the Aether (or the Aether could be accessed from the Sky Dimension) Some issues still remain that needs to be addresses to make it more compatible. Currently it is compatible with 1.9, but the following ideas could contribute to making it more compatible and possibly tie up a few loose ends.
1. Experience would have to be added for various mobs with a larger sum released from the optional dungeon bosses. (My suggestions: Slider=1000, Valkyrie Queen=2000, Sun Spirit=8000.)
2. More of the resources should be made renewable somehow. Strip-mining sky islands could get a little rough after a while. (Adding villages up there to trade with like Phygmen could be pretty cool.)
3. Aether based fuels should last longer than they currently do (or at least use suggestion #2 above).
4. Acheivement tree in the normal game has room to spare, so it should be easy enough to fit most of the new ones in.
5. If it is still desirable to keep Saddles as "found or traded for only" the recipe in the mod could be removed.
6. A good number of people have expressed interest in adding bunnies, capes, rings, amulets, hammers, mineable clouds, berries, staffs, and poisonous plants. The Aether already has all these.
7. The Red Dragons that are "mobs in developement limbo" could fit in very well here, especially if they spawned within a certain distance of the various dungeons as a place-marker and as a source of an otherwise nonrenewable resource such as Ambrosium Shards (also would represent a dragon's legendary inner power).
8. The Aether already has a solution to how the game can't stand large amounts of open Void. The bottom of the Aether is like a giant portal instead, but still dangerous to be ejected with.
9. Some things should still not be renewable, since those dungeon rewards will still clearly have a good sense of being earned. Some will even be overshadowed by other mods when the official mod support comes in on the next major update.
10. Aether gear will need to be given enchantment support and bosses will need to be made immune to most potion effects. Obviously it would be too easy if you could just poison the bosses to a half-heart and finish them off with one well placed blow.

If regular is Vanilla then what flavor is your Minecraft?
Yes. I mean this has been suggested countless times, but I'll agree again. Any sky dimension at all would be nice. But then again, a fourth dimension? That would take a LOT of work from Mojang.

You make it sound like they didn't do that already. Thrice.

Maybe not the exact Aether mod itself, just the terrain, the biomes, a few new blocks, a dungeon here and there, and around three or so mobs at first.
I have a few criticisms of the aether mod that I would not like to see if Mojang did a vanilla version of it.
For one thing, the aether needs to be all about open spaces. The Nether is basically confined, and the Overworld is this little slice of atmosphere that we live our lives within. When you think Sky Dimension, you need to think infinite sky, in all directions. That means infinite up and down. Well, down could still lead to the Overworld, but I think Up should go as far as the player can pillar.
The other thing is that there's too much duplication in the Aether. I want to see the Aether as a place like the Nether. You could live there if you really wanted, but the expected behaviour is to visit, build a base, gather materials, and then return to the Overworld. So basically, I don't want to see trees or dirt in the Aether, unless the player brings them in.
Third, dungeons don't really make sense for a dimension that's supposed to be all about open skies. I like the work the Aether team did on dungeons, but they should put those dungeons somewhere in the overworld.

I think you are going to love my Survival Let's Play series on YouTube! It's called Spaceboot1's Garden. I make pretty things.
Now think about poor Mojang developers who are trying to include dimension that people like when they didn't even finished working with dimensions we have right now.Just give it some time and you will see Aether as one of dimensions (since its uber-popular) but not right now.
All good points. The mod has its ups and downs, but the big point is that it will be done in some way eventually. I also just found the official suggestion thread where they are preparing ideas for the final build. Jeb and Notch said they'd get to it sometime after making the Nether better, but it is also true they have no set timeline. I can see that they are unofficial fans of the mod though. They keep gradually adding more aspects of it into the Overworld. I'll concentrate my suggestions about it into the main thread now that I've found it.
