An idea I got when i was watching a youtube video about brewing and potion effects. this is also something that is in another game I used to play.
Zombies and skeletons "and any future UNDEAD mobs that may be added" should have a small chance of debuffing you with a "Zombie status" while in this state your Instant health potions / gold apples and anything else that heals should work in the revirse.
