I dont want these to be completly be redstone manufactured because one blast on any weak point will shut down the air boat down and you'll have to rebuild while in battle. This should be made by craftable items and allowing you to build on to whatever kind of awsome boat your making. But you need air ballons i gues they would be looking like a laying down oval like all the others >_>. I like my idea and support the idea.
Again as so many people would have pointed out, the idea of the airship would be to make it not craftable but creative, but I see your point
If you don't want it to be completly redstone manufactured, I guess you would have to turn on everything manualy, or have some kind of new insolated redstone wiring that doesn't go flying when you get it
But I think the Block Grid System would take care of that if I read that correctly
Or maybe have a crew to help with that problem if it ever happens (like a friend or 2) monitering the redstone
if all of those don't then it's first hit (or you could insolate your wiring with something though, but that would make your airship heavier)

If we're going to have airships, maybe have "fighter" mobs?
These would be fast, manuavorable large birds that dive towards the player(or airship) and shoot flaming arrows. Fighters would return to darker pastures at daybreak, as they are nocturnal. They also have nests in clusters that replace fallen fliers every 10 minutes, so the only way to end the fighter threat in a region is to destroy those nesting centers.
I'm also in favor of aircraft, so maybe really big airships (super dreadnought) can have hangers?
1.Hull blocks - Main structural block, made ot of wood/metal, masts, bindings, etc.
Airship block same thing (sorta)
Quote from karbengo »
2.Buoyant blocks - Gas bags made out of cloth, (flapping) wings, vertical rotors (not to be confused with propellers).
Ok some would be good
Quote from karbengo »
3.Propultion blocks - Prop engines, sails, air oars. All have the same power, consumes no fuel, and are just for aestetics
I think that they should cost fuel because then it wouldn't cost as much, meaning a lot of people would have it
Quote from karbengo »
4.Control blocks - Steering stand or simple chair. Restricted to one per ship.
I would like it to be somehow redstone controlled, as not to add more blocks then needed (flip switches make you turn move up)
Quote from karbengo »
5.Optional blocks - Crafted hull parts with embeded chest or dispencer as cannon, and decorative parts, like a bow figure why not.
I think you could just add them onto the ship (place chest on ship, it becomes a part of the ship)
Quote from karbengo »
In theory, you'll start by putting down the hull on the ground. Each new block would fuse with his neighbour, just like fences and chests do. I know there is ppl with grand designs in mind but for the sake of coding simplicity, I suggest restricting the crafting space to a reasonable 10³ block volume.
I think it would it would be a good idea to only have one block (airship block) that would make the whole airship come alive, when right clicked
Quote from karbengo »
You can add details and optional parts
The ship require at least one engine (additionnal motors would be redundant against damages - see below). Then you add buoyant blocks. There isn't realy a need for true physics here. Add a number of buoyant block's AT LEAST equal to the number of all other parts. Some buoyant block could count as more than one block. (gas bag = 1, rotor = 5, wing = 10, etc).
I think again all the blocks acumulated would make the ship have a certain weight, then you would need a certain amount of propultions (amount of vertical power, propellers turned on) to lift off, if you don't your stuck
Quote from karbengo »
Finaly, put down the steering wheel. At this precise moment, all specific shipbuilding parts within range of the wheel will be bound togheter as one entity. No more blocks can be added until the steering wheel is removed.
Note that all the blocks don't have to touch as the wheel record and bind all the shipbulding parts around.
I think something like that would be cool
Quote from karbengo »
Stand at the wheel. If you have enough buoyancy, your ship would drive like an actual IG boat with the possibility to change altitude with PgUp and PgDown.
More amount of vertical propultion allows for more altitude
Quote from karbengo »
My idea is to keep it simple and reasonable. Block orientation doesn't affect the ship performances, nor do the overall shape. It's on the player part to create a funky looking machine or impose himself strict design rules.
Yeah I think that would be good
Quote from karbengo »
On the part of damages, I believe the simplest way is tu use the normal material resiliance to hits and explosions, as well as fire resistance. If a block is destroyed, the part drops and fall from the ship. The ship can be mangled by losing sensible parts. If it lose all his engine blocks or the steering wheel, it's stops. If enough buoyant blocks falls, it drops.
That would be good for zeplin like airships or airballoons (boyance) and the thing of blocks falling would be awsome
Quote from karbengo »
The eventual cannons (dispencers) are fix mounted straight ahead or broadside and can be fired by leftclicking while in control of the ship or by clicking directly the block. They are loaded with whatever can be into a dispencer. A dedicated explosive munition might be desirable though, since arrows are the only damaging projectiles to this day. (ghast fireballs?)
I think that they would need to be used by redstone (press lever attached to redstone shoots cannons)
Quote from karbengo »
I know most of this is prety much the same as what the OP said, but I realy want to put the emphasis on simplicity. It's hopeless to imagine gigantic hulks with realistic physicsand stats, and more gadgets than a swiss army knife.
Ok it's not hopeless, but it would have to be developped in stages (weapons on airship at the end)

NO!
IT IS NOT A CRAFTABLE ITEM! IT IS A CUSTOMISABLE BLOCK-GRID ENTITY!!!
Seriously, stop with all that stuff
Correction, it's an idea. It was posted here as an idea so that people could suggest alternatives or changes. I think it's a pretty good idea, as already stated, so be nice.
The complexity of an airship (regardless of how it is approached) is going to hinder it's chances of being considered. Unless the new game format etc makes it so that Mojang can add alot more things easily without nuking the performance, then this idea might get shunned until much later in the development :/
(That, and Mojang might not even like the idea of airships in MC <god forbid D:>)

Anyway, all you all might be interested in the airship mod currently being developed. In my opinion it's epic. I'm too lazy to throw out the link, but if you go to the mapping and modding section, you can find it easily enough.

Airship Mod (Yes I found one)+Monsters Mods=flying wraiths that pretty much chase down your airship forcing you to fly until daylight due to slow landing/takeoff. So yes, with those two mods installed the game is still challenging as it means you can only fly by day before landing or risk a whole one night stand with ghosts that ignite/harm you while you fly. But of course, without a challenge, there's no point. I voted yes even though i have an airship mod.

Air travel is a good idea, however huge airships don't sound like that much fun too me. For one, you would have to spend a huge amount of time gathering resources, remember, Minecraft is about more than just making vehicles. Two, I am all for Hot Air Balloons. Airships are just huge Hot Air Balloons essentially. Its kind of like you guys are asking for a super tanker to be implemented, when what we really need is a boat first.
I've noticed a lot of people keep talking about small, hot air balloon type contraptions. Essentially a boat with a balloon over them. While that may be good for starter vessels. I really hope the Notch does implement the entity system. We have seen some entities that are larger then the 1^3 blocks, like the bed, so this may not be far off.
the entities being spoken of would be 16x16x16 structures built block by block by the player. While suggested for larger sailing boats, it can easily be implemented into more advanced airships. You would of course need certain blocks on your contraption to get it to work. Like an engine, a form of propulsion, a device for flight/levitation. A control device to steer the vessel, and a way to anchor it to the ground for landings.

We have to start small, so we start with non-customizable airships
The we start with small, 16x16x16 cuztomizable airships
and then we move onto the "no limit" airship
And maybe the airship block, could sorta be like redstone
It will not have a rootceck for stuff underneath it or
it will do a rootcheck for everything in a 15 block radius (so you would need more than one)

Before or after we moved to a no-limit height? Don’t forget: The current max height above sea level is 64 blocks. That is not much.
Before dummie, we move onto the unlimited airship before we increase the height..I mean jeez everybody knows that...
Real Anwser :
You know what I mean by "No Limits", just meaning the max limit available that the codder can set
(might be 16x16x16 to fit inside one chunk, hopefully it will be more)

Don't limit this to airships. This could entirely revamp trains and ships. I'd really like a sub if notch or anyone else decides to make the oceans deeper and hide something valuable in them.
They'd need fuel, and lots of fuel. Airplanes use a lot more fuel than cars. You can't have cars in minecraft because it'd be really hard to drive a car up a block. But in order for Airships to be put in the game they'd need to be something that you'd have to have a lot of materials to build. That way you can't start a game and just go off building an airship. You'd have to play a long time to gather said materials. You'd need a source of power, like a motor. But it'd be an airship so you'd need a lot of power. You could smelt iron into steel and use the steel to make an engine. Then, you could dig down to the lower levels and find oil which could be mixed with other ingredients in a mixer to make fuel. You'd need to make the actual ship, and you'd need a way to fly it. Would it be flown first person or 3rd person and what would happen if you crashed it? Would it burn or explode or just need repaired?
Also, there'd need to be mobs which attack your airship and you'd need a defense system. Cannons would work, except you'd need a crap-ton of gunpowder to fire those cannons. And you'd need to put the ship on auto pilot to man those guns. Also, how would you land the ship? You'd need relatively flat land or a lake to land on and you can't just crash the thing into the ground and have it be intact. It'd have to be a vehicle that takes skill to drive.
The inside of the airship that you can customize could be like 12x8x9 and then the outside and walls could surround it with the propellers and all that fun stuff.
tl;dr

I think that, if it was implemented, it would have to take a hella long time to get the stuff for it. Maybe a list like:
Redstone Furnace (not real, just a random example)
100+ Wooden planks (decking)
30+ String (for ropes etc)
20+ Iron (for the metal bits, heh ;>.>)
50 leather (for the ballooon =D)
Just an example of how it could go xD
URANIUM
I would love to have a fast, effective transportation trough the map, but the solution is trains!
