Good day everyone! I am making a single player quest map and wondered... damn, how much easier could it be if I didn't have to put signs everywhere? A book stand or a bookshelf! It would work like so, place the book stand down, and you can place a book that you've written in on it (or 3 to complete an archive.)
*Crafting this would be very simple, try to follow along with the recipe below; if x= stick, y= wood, z= bookshelf | y | y | y |
| x | z | x |
| x | | x |
Now you have a book stand. This can be placed on the floor to look like a table, or placed against a block to resemble a half slab with books on it. A total of 3 books can be placed on it. A total of 2 different things can happen:
1) The player can right click to select the book he/she wants, acting as if each book are 3 different blocks.
2) A small interface opens up, with what resembles 3 books in line. The player can click one, and it will open like a book and quill does.
#!# Books and Book&Quills are placed in order from left-to-right by default, and the only way to get the books you placed on the shelf, is to break it, similar to a bookshelf.
#!# NOTE THAT WHEN YOU USE THE BOOK STAND YOU ARE NOTE TAKING THE BOOKS, JUST READING THEM AND RETURNING THEM. EACH PLAYER SHOULD HAVE A DIFFERENT SESSION WHEN READING THE BOOK, MEANING THAT THEY WON'T BE READING THE SAME BOOK, AND ALWAYS START OFF ON PAGE 1.
I have been wanting something similar for ages as well and when the new mincraft 1.3.1 got here i thought my prayers had been answerd with the new books and quills only to find the only vinilla way to store them was chests. Book stands would be great but only being able to get the books back by destroying the stand could get annoying. Instead it could act like the personal chests from ic2, as in once someone accesses it they are the only one who can change the inventory of the stand. Also being able to store books in book shelves would be a great plus. It could have a gui with a 3x3 grid to store books but anyone can get them out (for pickup quests and such). But you don't get the books out the conventional way, clicking on them opens the book but with an extra button to remove the book from the shelf (similar to the books in oblivion (for those that have played it)). Also while on the subject of books, i think that books should be more detrimental to enchanting, as in the enchantments could be phrases and such in books that you find in dungeons. This makes it more worthwhile searching for dungeons and if you know the phrase you can write it in a book then use it to enchant. The power of the enchantments could still be regulated by having to have bookshelves near the enchantment table like it currently does.
The enchantment table would need an extra slot for placing the book into, and the actual apearence of the table would be the same minus the book ontop enless you leave a book in it.

I think that destroying it wouldn't really get THAT annoying... the only time you would need to place them is in creative mode right? because of course in survival, your just killing things and trying to..well...SURVIVE.I think that destroying them would be easy, and think of this...what about a printing press? Or just anything that can copy a book into several others, this way you can give new players a book of the rules. Anyway this is just my opinion. I'm actually surprised i got so many hits on this. The ONLY time you would need the book stand, would be in creative when building a map... just like book n'Quills. Nobody is writing a story when they're trying to survive... Its just something Jeb could add for the fun of it. I wasn't thinking so much a book shelf or regular shelf, because bookshelves should only have one purpose: that being boosting enchanting abilities. But I would really like you to elaborate on what you meant by "enchant the book." Maybe if you enchant the book to find out what you are going to get, then right click the book, the cursor gets the glow of the enchant and you right click the weapon/item you want to enchant. Seems fair? This also means that you could sell enchantments(this would probably only be used with the regular book without quill) You can sell enchantments on servers to gain money at the cost of your own levels. Please elaborate more on your ideas. If you don't like this idea... DIE
I think this idea deserves merit. It would make displaying information a lot easier.
You might want to contact the creators of the Book Stand in the Mystcraft mod.
They already have a bookstand that works for mystcraft books, where you can read the book by right clicking, or access the single-slot inventory by sneaking and right clicking so you can take the book back without destroying the stand.
Seems like it would be a relatively small change to make it function for vanilla books as well :3
*edit - Since I first wrote this, I've posted this as a suggestion on the mystcraft forums, so we'll see how that goes :3
