Okay, this is a relatively small suggestion that I feel is just large enough to have it's own thread. This is not a very high priority, but I feel that it would improve the game. This is not incredibly polished or set in stone and constructive criticism is appreciated.
Here's what I'm suggesting-
Firstly, chickens should not be breedable using wheat. It does make some amount of sense but it seems odd to me (they're not mammals) and there would be less of a point to it. Chickens are already the easiest animals to farm; there's no reason to have two ways to breed them.
Chickens would lay eggs less often, although still not an overly long time- just a bit. If chickens were fed seeds (by throwing them on the ground next to them OR just feeding them directly. If they can be fed by throwing food on the ground it should also be possible to feed other animals this way.) there would be a reasonably high chance (60%?) that they would go into a "fed" state for some amount of time. In this state, they would lay eggs much more often and would not eat any more until they were hungry again. There should be some visual cue for this, such as them moving slower when fed. Also, perhaps if chicks were fed they would grow quicker.
Eggs would possibly have a higher chance of hatching a chick, depending on how the balance works out.
One last thing- hatched chicks should identify the closest adult (if there is one within 10 blocks) as their mother if they don't already.
Why I think this is a good idea-
It gives another use for seeds
It makes chicken farming harder
You don't have to use it- it's just more efficient
It makes you choose what to do with your resources
Just want to clarify what you want here. This would eliminate two chickens spawning a baby chicken like the other animals? The only way to make more chickens would be to get eggs and then try to hatch them?
If so, I think this is a pretty smart idea, makes a lot of sense as live chickens aren't just born from chickens mating. If this was put in though I think you would have to physically click on the chickens with seeds to feed them, can't see just throwing them on the ground working. I would also have to argue for a higher percent chance of an egg hatching a baby chicken when thrown because if that is the only way to get more chickens it would take forever with the current system (12.5% chance of spawning a chicken per egg).
An additional reason this makes sense is that the sheer number of seeds you get from farming, especially if you have a farm of around 100-200 wheat. I always end up having multiple stacks of seeds just hanging around after I harvest and replant.

Yes.

Perhaps- throwing them on the ground has worked for some mods ( 0:30-1:00) and it would make automation possible (i.e. dispensers) but I can see it being irritating to code and why you might want it the other way. I think I'll make it a poll.

Agreed, I'll add that.

Honestly, I got the idea by trying to come up with another use for seeds. All you can do with them is plant wheat, but if you use them to plant wheat you just get more seeds. Which is fine- until you get all the wheat you want.
I support. It would give me a reason to farm chickens, chicken farming would make sense, and seeds wouldn't be trash anymore. Also, I'd prefer them able to eats seeds off of the ground. So I can make something that turns seeds into chickens automatically.
I support. Considering that in real life chickens lay probably only one egg a day, the current egg drop rate is too overpowered. Maybe one egg every 8-10 minutes instead of 6-8.
I also agree with throwing seeds on the ground, but would there be some balance where if a chicken has eaten 3 or more seeds he won't eat anymore?
Also, what are your thoughts on the amusing occurrence of having 4 chicks spawn from one thrown egg which, if you were unaware, can happen in Minecraft? (would this be some mutant egg with 4 yolks?)

No I will not +1 you unless you say something worth +1ing. Respect is earned, not given.

Yes, maybe that would make a good default. But I think they would actually lay eggs a minute or two more often then they do now after being fed? I don't have any hard numbers yet, maybe just having the fed state the same as it is now would work with the new hatching chance. It does have to be a significant difference though...

Sorry if that's not what you meant ^^

It would remain the same, although the chance would be altered a little to fit with any new hatching chance. I am not aiming for uber-realism here- I quite like the chicken quadruplets, actually.
With respect to the use of seeds, I have proposed a very simple solution. There should be a craft to convert seeds in to wheat, and wheat back into seeds. That's all. My original thread proposed 9 seed -> 2 wheat and 1 wheat -> 4 seed, because I thought there should be some loss to the process, but really, I'd be happy with just 4:1 and 1:4.

Thank you for your opinion. I do not agree, however, as I feel it would make the game too easy and not add anything to it even with a loss. I suppose grain is used to make flour anyway, so it does make some sense, but I do not support that idea. Gameplay > Realism.
Is it okay if I bump this thread? I want feedback and if nobody sees it on the forums it'll pretty much die since it's not like I'm in anybody's signatures.
I would like something like this to happen. Or at the very least, to let us use seeds instead of wheat to breed chickens. It makes sense, and it would eliminate the stacks upon stacks of seeds we all have taking up room in our chests. Another option would be perhaps to use the seeds to make flour, with a conversion of 4 seeds = 1 flour, which can be used to make the same items as wheat. That way, it has a purpose, but doesn't outshine the wheat itself.
I like this idea. But as far as eating seeds off the ground I support that as long as you can do it with the other items used for breeding mobs too. No reason to give that perk to just one mob.

And just an Idea
how about if you feed wheat to chickens the chickens will follow you for 2:00
just an Idea : D
Thank you for the support! I'll think about the wheat, although it might be unnecessary- I don't want this suggestion to become overly complex.
And you only need to say "just an Idea" once .
I'm not saying ducks don't lay eggs. If anything, I'm agreeing with you, I'm just saying chickens need a BIG overhaul. Plus, your suggestion has been suggested numerous times before, you should use the search feature before posting (as the forum rules say..).
You should check out the complete chicken rehaul thread.. I'd have to look it up, haven't checked it in a while, but it suggests a lot of senseful changes to make chickens more like.. chickens in MineCraft.

If I were you, I'd do exactly the same thing as you would, because I'd be you. Duh.
