I was just browsing the discussion forums, and people were saying that they wanted to be able to destroy forests and burn up everything in the world. This would be fun, but a stray lava pool could cause much unwanted havoc. So, I introduce, GREEK FIRE:
Greek Fire was a kind of incendiary tool used by the ancient people (true story - check wikipedia). They could burn in water and was used in war. I think that this should be put in Minecraft. A Greek Firetorch would be made by using the flint and steel formation then putting gunpowder in the corners. These firetorches would look like flint and steel, but with the enchantment glow thing. Greek Fire would spread REALLY quick, but wouldn't burn anything not made of organic materials. Grass WILL burn, but only for 2 seconds and will then revert into dirt. Unlike what you might expect, Greek Fire will burn things very slowly. Just to make it fun. And also, Greek Fire will be destroyed by flowing water, but not stationary source blocks, so it does burn in seas, but can be extinguished by a quick spray.
That's all. I know it's quite short, but the idea is simple and doesn't need anymore explanation. Have fun destroying forests!
Comments please?Ah, yes. It's not a griefing tool because it can be easily put out and doesn't burn up the whole world, only wood and leaves and flowers etc..Ah, yes. I haven't even bought MineCraft, I don't have the money...
On Topic: This is still a ridiculous griefing tool. I am not seeing the difference between this anf regular fire...you are essentually saying it only burns everything that usually burns (organic materials). Also it sounds like you want it to spread faster than normal fire and burn longer than normal fire. Just a terrible terrible idea.
Thats a pretty half-a** response.
I think Kholdstare is saying that because in the topic title it specifies that it isnt a mass griefing tool...which it most certainly is.
Not really a good idea, because it's basically the same thing as flint and steel, but the fire behaving differently. Not only that, but it would have no practical use. You say you could clear forests with it, but the fire can still only spread to adjacent blocks, and since the grass only burns for two seconds it won't have time to spread. It's just a less useful version of flint and steel.
I don't really want to burn things down myself, it's just that sometimes people want to mass-destroy a jungle. And it is a griefing tool, like TNT, but not a "destroy everything in seconds and pisses people off" kind of mass one. In my opinion, unless you're in a jungle, it wouldn't be much more dangerous than TNT.

So its a much lower resource cost, much more difficult to contain, but takes about a minute to decimate things, type of griefing tool. And seriously, clearing a jungle is a massive feat, yet you boiled it down to 3 fairly common materials.
First of all, if it looks like an enchanted flint and steel, acts like an enchanted flint and steel, why not just make it an enchanted flint and steel?
Secondly, this is nothing like real life greek fire. I'm pretty sure greek fire is a liquid substance that burns well, not a magic flint and steel that only burns organic matter. So this is horribly misnamed.
Finally, this serves no purpose other than to burn things and we already have a number of things to do that. It is practically made for griefers, despite what you say. Structures are not the only things that can be griefed. I don't know about you but I don't want to look at a burned down jungle, I want to look at the jungle, but now griefers can burn them down far too easily.
It takes one coal, one gunpowder, and one blaze powder to make 3 fire charges. Finding blaze powders are not exceedingly difficult to find, but it would be much harder than finding the components you would want to be included into greek fire. Essentially, greek fire would be more powerful than fire charges because they last longer, burn on water, and the components to create them are readily available without going to the nether and killing blazes for blaze powders... among other things I assume, but apparently the idea is simple and does not need any more explantation, as you say in your OP.
Yet it does.
Would it fire like fire charges, or would it act like flint and steel, only igniting one block in front of you?
If you burned an ocean, would it spread endlessly so long as there was stationary water?
If a tree fell on a testificate, would anyone else on the minecraft server hear it?
Would greek fire burn longer on people, and would stationary water not put out the flame?
Whether its a good idea or a bad idea is for the majority of people to decide, but as far as I'm concerned, I wouldn't be for it if it could be crafted so easily, and it is way to easy to craft in my opinion

anything can be used as a greifing tool my friend.

it is supposed liguid, the recipe was lost thousands of years ago. i checked wiki and has anyone other than me read the percy jackson books? the implementation of greek fire was as a highly explosive liquid fire. they destroyed an entire cruise ship with it in a matter of seconds. so yes, it would be used as a griefing tool, and yes you are highly inacurite in making a greek fire flint and steel as flint and steel just creates fire. besides, i think griefers have enough material with which to destroy other peoples creations already.so no enchanted flint and steel either agreed?

haha, this could be the best line ever.

same with flint and steel and fire charges.

Another quality post...I don't think you are reading what people are saying here
Those books are far from realistic.
Not only are they far from realistic, they're far from the original myths! Percy Jackson is not the authority on all things ancient and Greek.
I'd like to point out that flint and steel currently only burns organic matter. Wood is organic, even in plank form.
Something I could go for that is not dissimilar to this is a flammable liquid. But this is just... no.
