If I suggested that we add a phaser that blows up entire biomes to Minecraft, would you be able to find constructive criticism? Not every idea works after little revision. I personally don't think that mobs should be sentient - I feel that it doesn't fit thematically with the mobs.
Yeah, great idea, man. However, I have to adress some other unmentioned problems (or "problem") with Skeletons and like edit some statements made. First of all, someone said Skeletons should sink, no, actually, skeletons would be rather light and would be able to float, however, I agree they should not drown at all, because of the no lungs, lol. I agree with the low health idea, skeletons, to me, are hard enough to kill, but I love extra challenge, so it will be hard anyway, even if they have lower health. The problem with skeletons though, is, their reaction times are WAY too fast, I try to pull a fast attack on one, as soon I hit the floor, I loose two hearts. I also think the Skelo's ranged accuracy should be increased, because they tend to miss EVERY shot from afar if your moving. Just to add something cool to them, when they die, you should see white bone particles fly everywhere like when you break a block.

My point was that the "sentient" part was not the whole thread. Have you read the "Read this before you post?" You would see that your example closely matches one of the ridiculous suggestions. This, however, was not nearly matched by any. It was not ridiculous. I rest my case. Read the "To the critics" sticky. It also says that if you dont have any constructive criticism, voice why you dont like it and let that be the end.

I agree with that reaction time. Its like a 180 instant headshot. All mobs need somthing that if you successfully sneak up on one, they dont whip around and start mauling you. The way they currently are, most can even see through walls as if they have echolocation. Something in the coding needs to be changed so that we can get the first attack in once and a while.
Skeletons are actually the only threat in the whole game, you can kill all the other mobs by just standing still and spamming left click. I feel like they should work on making the other mobs more dangerous before making skeletons even stronger.

Or just one all at once. I think things like "The Redstone update" and "The adventure update" and "The Mob Update" Really gets the player base's support and hype going. Some of these are simple changes, so if they were to be included in one single update, I think it wouldn't be that bad on _Jeb and whoever else was working on it, they would feel motivated.
Once again, you bring up a strong and powerful point.
I would also like it if skeletons couldn't instantly shoot you when you come around a corner. Changing this wouldn't make them more difficult, but still.
Perhaps make them shoot a bow like the player, charging the bow with the arm animation. Here is some suggestions related to this:
When the player is within range and view of the skeleton, the skeleton will always either be shooting or charging its next shot.
If the skeleton is pursuing a player, that is within range but not within view, the skeleton will keep an arrow fully charged and will fire it at the player is he comes within view. Since it has an arrow cocked, it will move slower, like the player does.
If the skeleton is pursuing a player that is not within range, it will uncock any arrow it has ready in order to move faster and will chase the player as normal.
Also, being able to pick up skeleton arrows is a bad idea. Since skeletons have infinite arrows you could just isolate a skeleton and dodge arrows for a while to get a bunch of them, or rig up something so that you don't have to dodge and the skeleton would always miss and all you have to do is sit there. It could too easily be abused which is why you can't do it currently.

Yes! yes! yes! After all, they are snipers and snipers don't have very good reaction time.

I've been posting on the suggestion section for a while now. I've read all of the stickies.
I'm not saying this idea is ridiculous. That wasn't the point I was trying to get across. I was trying to say that the parts of the idea I mentioned are not thematic to the rest of Minecraft. Mobs aren't supposed to be sentient - they have never even hinted at that before. Now, that's not to say that just because it hasn't been so in the past doesn't mean it can't be so now - it can. But I think that Notch made it that way for a reason. Making mobs sentient adds no gameplay value - when you fight mobs, it's not supposed to be a drawn out thing with mobs using strategy, it's supposed to be relatively simple.
I like they idea of skeletons not drowning, so they should have infinite breath-bubbles. However it still makes sense to get squished by gravel so they should still be able to take suffocation damage.
Mounting spiders would be pretty cool, it would make spider jockeys more common and a little more feared.
I think that trying to avoid shooting other mobs would be a bit silly, but it would be fine on hard mode.

With the new mob AI mobs are semi-sentient. And what isn't thematic, I see people making spaceships and modern towns in minecraft, I assume that isn't thematic either?

That "seeing through walls" is the mob reacting to the code that explains to "search for the player if the player is within 25 blocks. It could easily be fixed if the code said to only do that if the mob has line of sight to the player.

Bones are actually very strong. Realistically, they would have the 3rd most health, under Zombies and Endermen, since Creepers have a brittle texture and the exoskeletons of Spiders/Silverfish are probably weaker than bone.
Bones are strong, but them being held together with out muscle is not strong.
Also, he said " After all, they are made of dry bones! ", and dry, aged bones can be very weak.
Rare Drops: A skeleton, when directly killed by the player, has a chance of dropping a bow. This bow shouldn't be "new" but have a random number of shots left. This amount of shots resembles how long the skeleton was alive and how many arrows it used. Finally, I propose the ability to pick up a skeleton's arrows. If yo can pick up other players arrows in PvP, then you should be able to pick up skeleton arrows.
Bows are a rare drop already, but I like the "already has been used" idea.
Oh, and arrows should never be picked up from skeletons, otherwise players would farm arrows easily from live skeletons.
Call me lazy but I didn't read the whole thing because the beginning has an invalid statement. This was before the 1.2 AI update. Skeletons now face you and fire. They are still predictable and fairly easy to combat, but they do not circle anymore
Skeletons should not be able to swim (No floating!) (should be able to walk along the bottom of a lake for example)
Skeletons should be affected slightly less from current (made of bones).
Skeletons should not be drown-able
Skeletons should not be suffocate-able (Burying and unburying later? Uncovering skeletons in the sand while gathering some for glass?)
If you want to go the pick-up-able arrows route, they should have a set ammount of arrows, (15 or so?) after which they shoot their own bones (White arrows) that cannot be picked up (or can be, but cannot be shot).
I agree with all of that except the last one. If they walked on the ocean floor it would be totally pirates of the caribbean. lol
To be honest on the first night of Minecraft Skeletons are incredibly dangerous because if you don't spawn near any sheep then you can't sleep to skip the night. And I don't exactly want to wait in my house all night and do nothing.
But I still support this. Skeletons need to be stronger.
Bows are a rare drop already, but I like the "already has been used" idea.

I knew that, I was modifying the rare drop. Also, I bumped the post and removed the bit about picking arrows up.

I'd really like to see the return of special skeleton arrows (they once were purple), yet maybe as white as if they were shooting their own bones?
Skeleton arrows were purple? I joined in beta 1.6 so I didn't notice that.
EDIT: Yes they were, I checked some alpha 1.1 screenshots and I saw that they were purple.
