You know how it's pretty difficult to create maps that line up perfectly (where one map's left edge matches another map's right edge, for example)... It requires you to carefully measure which block you're standing on when making the 2nd map (by use of F3). It may be especially problematic if you're in the ocean.
It should be simpler than this, by use of crafting. Just put an existing map in the center of the workbench, and a 2nd map at one of the 4 spots above, left, right, or below it. It produces a new map that has its coordinates pre-set based on the coordinates of the map in the center. So if you put the 2nd map above the map in the center, it'll give you a new map that will fill in seamlessly north of the area covered by the first map. Using this recipe will also leave the original map in the workbench (much like how the cake recipe leaves the empty buckets).
