I like this because there is an option for those of us who like crafting to spend a lot of time going through complex processes. Maybe I don't want to adventure for hours through dark caves to get all the diamonds needed for a diamond sword? I happen to have a lot of gold on hand, so I will go through a significantly more complicated process to make a diamond sword out of less diamonds. The only thing I don't like in this case is this
That shows using more diamonds (unless they are being used to represent another gem, if so, I apologize) to turn a gold sword into a diamond sword than it would to just build a regular diamond sword. A diamond sword takes 2 diamonds to build, and that shows using three to transmute. If we could edit this somehow, so you use LESS diamonds than needed, but more gold or other rare/expensive thing it would make the recipe make more sense.
When iron is smelted from its ore by commercial processes, it contains more carbon than is desirable. To become steel, it must be melted and reprocessed to reduce the carbon to the correct amount, at which point other elements can be added.
Why is it in every game with metals, that steel needs coal and iron... The coal should be removed from it not put in..
Ohh well, maybe it's for balancing purposes
Unless I'm mistaken, coal is added to increase the heat of the forge while refining steel. The additional heat is required to remove the impurities from iron.
I could be wrong.
Anyway, on topic, I love this alchemy system. Not too gimmick-y, and implemented in a way that is practical.

Are you always so pessimistic?
Yes, yes I am. A pessimist is always either right, or pleasantly surprised.

Egads..this is World of Warcraft meets Battlefield 1942 in a dark alley with way too much to drink and no discarded mattress nearby.
Astounding how so many people didn't read enough to realize that the suggestion for using 3 diamonds to alchemize (new word, it'll be the next big thing) a diamond sword is operating under the assumption that you can't normally craft diamond tools.
Personally I love the idea, it gives players more options to pursue than warrior/adventurer or farmer. It would be especially nice with multiplayer in place, creating reasons for players to trade and cooperate. (Go get a bunch of materials for me and I'll make a diamond sword for you)
As someone else mentioned I don't think that alchemy is the best way to refine/create some metals. That seems like a job for a forge. This depends, of course, on what metals are involved, and there's not necessarily anything wrong with multiple paths to the same end.
I suppose I also don't have a problem with more traditional "spells" as long as they represent an excessive expenditure of time and resources. Clearly not something many people would have access too or the patience to acquire. I do realize that alchemy is an entirely different breed than "pew pew" magic, but I figured I'd throw out all of my two cents.
Possible use for the philosopher stone in a way:
Boosts your max health over your limit by twice the amount.
You can still get hurt, but in general your max health is temporarily increased to 20.
You can't heal though so it only stays that like if you used it once and not get hurt.
The only way to restore your health to 20 again is to use another philosopher stone.
In terms of use for transmuting something, maybe it can be used as a catalyst to multiple the outcome by 4x?
Item duplication in that matter, since you made a very powerful item.
So if you use it as a catalyst to craft weapons and armor, they will gain bonus durability x2, and gain attack boost x1.5?
In a way, this stone should be usable on almost everything, meaning it boosts things to it's greatest potential in all.
I wouldn't be surprised if someone later on ends up suggesting sacrifices... Lol Sheeps and Pigs or mobs...
Maybe to make something like a philosiphers stonbe you must kill loads of people in a giant city-wide transmutation circle with a liveing suit of armour in the centre? (Yeah, I watch far too much Fullmetal Alchemist)
That isn't sure to the sense of the manga.
FMA Brotherhood is based on the original story and the episodes ended on 64 i think.
The balancing factor will be the shear number of resources required. Not volume, number. If we get biomes, and biome-specific resources, and alchemist stone should require something like a rare resource from every biome. In order to pull one off, you have to travel to the different biomes and accumulate all the resources (or trade for them), which would probably be like finding a dozen different types of diamond from a dozen distance places in difficulty. If you are interested in putting forth the effort, you should be appropriately rewarded, but not everyone will want to put forth that effort. Nor should it be needed to be successful.
Hm.... yes, that makes sense. If we get biomes, it would make sense to have to collect something from each of the biomes to make a philosopher's stone or something of the like.
The Philosopher's stone is thought to turn lead to gold so maybe something along those lines where it is VERY hard to get and it only has like 10 uses but it can remove like half or more of the requirements to do something or just turn items to gold either one.

Both VERY hard to get and overly restrictive use makes it not worth the effort. Look at diamonds; they are vaguely hard to find, but last longer than anything else, and people still think it is underpowered. This would be much harder to get, and should be well worth the payout. It does still need to be balanced, but turning items to gold is just about the opposite of useful. I like the idea of being able to transmute any resource into any other, at various rates, and using up a corresponding amount of its charge. This would allow you to turn the mass quantities of low-level resources they will likely have accumulated by that point into something useful. It doesn't allow access to resources before you can normally get them, since it itself is probably one of the highest tier items in the entire game, and it doesn't remove the need to have resources, but it does allow much more fluidity in which resources you have.
I also like the idea of it being a major component of the elixir of life, which would have similarly powerful but balanced effects.
These items are the kinds of things I can see people questing after for a couple weeks or more, and should be worth it.

Listen I agree with you entirely I was just giving suggestions as to extra uses apart from elixir of life though i should of said that..... now you know

Please don't ever come on a thread which was obviously very well-thought-out by the creator and start yelling "No". At least try to include some sort of reason for you rejection of it.

Me: *Long montage of crafting and smelting*
King: "Is it ready?"
Me: *Pant* "Yes." *Pant* "One question."
King: "You may ask."
Me: "Do you have to drink this every night with dinner!?"

I think I'll be incredibly disappointed if this ends up not being the system for alchemy.
Defend your words flexibly.
Change your words fittingly.
Let prejudice, popular opinion, and preconception be free from your judgments.
I agree with you there this is one of the best ideas ever put on the forum ever.
