Ever since the days of 1.7 when pistons debuted, people have been building light switches using sticky pistons and glowstone. Now, in 1.2.5, we have redstone lamps, which give off light when you turn them on. These have always been a good way to tell people that you are better at minecraft than them.
Yesterday I was in my survival world when I obtained 37 redstone from a cave. I was about to go up the surface to build a jack-o-lantern light switch when I had an epiphany. I paused my game, and thought long and hard, "What are light switches for?" First I thought from a practical perspective. Light does not run out in the minecraft world, nor do you have to pay bills, so you could just leave your lights on all the time. Removal of these lights can actually be dangerous, as hostile mobs could spawn. I then considered that they could be a purely aesthetic addition to a house, but surely something made of redstone, and in some cases glowstone, like light switches, should have some actual function.
So, my humble suggestion is the following: You can only sleep when the light level is less than eight.
I chose less than eight, because hostile mobs can spawn at those conditions. This would add a strategic element to the creation of light switches. This would also add more realism to minecraft.
"But Arson," you protest, "Couldn't people just break their torch before they go to bed, and add it again when they wake up?"
Perhaps. But consider this analogy. You begin your minecraft shelter with a door. A simple wooden door. However, as you advance, so does the door. You add a pressure plate to it, to automatically open and close it. You replace the wooden door with a sticky-piston powered version. You add a doorbell to let yourself know when something is nearby. You power it with a combination lock. Eventually, the door becomes a symbol of how far you have advanced in the game.
And the same applies to the light switches. You begin with the torch-breaking method. Later, you create a simple piston-powered one. Then come the redstone lamps. Eventually, your light switch can shut off when you enter the bedroom, and turn on when you leave.
I really like this idea. However, I think you should be able to sleep at night without having to break the torches, or something like that (as it'd be annoying to have to replace them everynight). Or make it at a light level where mobs don't spawn (as I don't like the idea of mobs spawning in my house :P).
But basically I like the idea of adding functionality to light switches other than just for the sake of being able to turn the lights off.
I like it, but if mobs can spawn in the maximum light level, then they'd spawn in your sleep. And that's not good. So, how would that be fixed?
Then again, perhaps this rule could only be implemented in hard/hardcore mode. That would work better, as then sleeping would be a challenge within itself.

The funny thing is, by the time you finish reading this, you will have wasted about four seconds of your life...
I really don't like this idea at all. It seems like too much work for little to no benefit in my opinion. Not everyone uses redstone and makes light switches, including myself most of the time. I really wouldn't want to go breaking the nearby torches nearby every night when I want to sleep or making extravagant or even simple redstone contraptions just to use an item that has been in the game for a super long time with no issues or needed tweaks.

"You can't go to sleep, there are monsters nearby" debuted in 1.8. Beds have been around since beta 1.3.
I think that at night having lights in the room shouldn't matter (as I don't want to have to make the room dark just to sleep (in real life I can sleep with the lights on :V ))

True. But that message was added when they decided to change that mobs would attack you if you were near them or in the dark. The fully fixed it with the following 1.9 prerelease.

I like it, but maybe make the light level different per difficulty, eg; on easy -10 on normal -8 on hard -7. I would also suggest that after awhile redstone lamps burn out and either need to be right clicked with red or glowstone.

sorry; I use, way too much, 'punctuation', it's a habit...
Sorry, but no. For one thing, most people find it annoying enough when there are monsters near by, which is why they light up their house, but now only to not be able to have light? Sorry, but, just no, It is original, but not good for my taste.

Besides, the player is conditioned by the game to believe that dark is bad. Turning around and telling him that dark is good would be strange.
That's a pretty darn long time, given that Beta 1.8 was released almost a year ago.
Really solid original suggestion. Would be great to add in the game.

They don't spawn in your sleep because they can't spawn near you, unless your room is really really big.
