The other day I was wondering maybe add some succession too minecraft. Like lets say you make a huge tnt hole. Over time it would be covered by dirt (5-10 Minecraft days?). Or maybe if you cut down many trees, maybe over time they could get saplings and regrow. If you kill a ton of animals over time more will come to the area.
The main problem is the game having to track everything you do anywhere. Here is an example of what I mean for blowing up a place with TNT:
Current System:
Player replaces Air Block with TNT block
Player activates TNT with Flint and Steel
TNT is replaced wirh Air Block and a lit TNT entity is spawned.
Through the TNT's explosion code, X blocks are replaced with Air Blocks
Proposed System:
Player replaces Air Block with TNT block
Player activates TNT with Flint and Steel
TNT is replaced wirh Air Block and a lit TNT entity is spawned.
Through the TNT's explosion code, X blocks are replaced with Air Blocks
Game records the Air Block at coordinates X,Y,Z was made by the TNT (for all new Air Blocks)
Game remembers those blocks until they are replaced by something else (immediately if water flows in or if the player fills them, or the max days until it passes the checks needed to regenerate the land.
Game can now forget about those Air Blocks
And that would have to be done every time you set TNT or cut down trees or do stuff like that. It's a neat concept, but would be very laggy or cause a lot of bloat if you do a lot of stuff at once like that. And as I very much enjoy cutting down a lot of forest at one time this would greatly inconvenience me.
