I was going to say it's been suggested before, but then I realized it ROSE FROM THE DEPTHS OF THE ARCHIVES FROM WHENCE IT CAME DUE TO USE OF THE FOULEST OF MAGICKS, so it might be the original.
Anyhow, I think this shouldn't even be in the suggestions forum because it should ALREADY BE IN THE ****ING GAME.
I like the idea of it being 8 coal, too, because of 8 being pretty much the most important number in Minecraft, including for smelting.
Yes, Of cource they should. Hey if they made a redstone block then why not a coal block I think coal is the only thing that's mined that is' ent a block yet. So go coal block!!
After playing around with the Minecraft 2.0 update, I found Block of Coal in the creative inventory.
Some notes:
- Usable in a furnace, unknown amount of smelting uses (furnaces blow up during the 7th smelt).
- Does not catch on fire.
- Crafting recipe: 3x3 grid of coal or charcoal.
Now I don't agree with the fact that the block of coal will be used in furnaces. All material block like iron, gold... are used for decorative reasons or for other reasons like beacon.
Also, Redstone blocks are movable Redstone torches. The point is, the blocks have a use that correlates to their actual use as an item(excluding tool and armor material blocks, since block armor would be OP).
Your idea is not really that creative. Long smelting times? Bucket of lava. Especially since the snapshot making it so you don't use a bucket. Flammable block? Netherrack. Pixel art? Black is covered by wool and obsidian. Storage? I doubt anyone gets a bunch of coal and does nothing with it. If you have too much, use it! It's not that hard. Oversuggested and uncreative.

(also coal blocks should be furnace fuel)
Edit: Pageclaim in the name of hats.
That's why it's only 8 blocks of coal for the block crafting. It'd smelt exactly one stack.
