Made by arranging 8 Coal in a 3x3 crafting grid. (Why not 9? One coal block can be used to smelt a whole stack.)
One peice of coal is a small price to pay for the extra storage space.
Besides, Hoppers & Droppers can provide a virtually infinite suppy of fuel.
9 peices for a block provides an element of stratagy too: lumps of coal for efficiancy, Blocks for longevity.
Granted it's not an even swap, but it's still an option.
Considering they turned redstone into blocks, they should probably do this, so we could save a lot of space and it could be a 9x coal durability fuel. That would be neat.
I support, I want blocks for all the stuff I have tons of like wheat (hay blocks) and the new redstond block definitely made storage more efficient. The 8 coal idea is also great. I support everything about the OP

(I especially like this idea in combination with the one guy's "Dark Quartz" thread. Make them look very similar, and you could make some interesting traps, since the coal is very flammable, and the quartz is not =P)
Yup, this is useful. The only thing I would change is instead of eight coal in a square, have it be a two by two recipe, not unlike quarts or nether brick. The only reason for that is it doesn't really make much sense to make a square of coal with a hole in the center, to me at least. Obviously the coal block would then only be able to smelt half of a stack of items, rather than the full sixty four. Oh well, good anyway.
Support. To me, there is absolutly no reason why it shouldn't be implemented. I mean it doesn't even change the game really. So I think its a good idea.
Sure I guess. I care more about the decorative possibilities, but this WOULD be useful in enderchests like how iron blocks are useful to me (and iron is more rare).

Yes, I always have too much coal... Especially when compared to my redstone.
3 double-chests full when I'm looking for a few stacks of diamond blocks, anyone?
I would prefer 9 coal, but I see why you'd want 8.
9 coals for storage. You craft block with 9 coals and then you can craft block back into 9 coals.
Block of coal has the duration of 8 coals in furnace.
Love the idea and everything about it. It'd be nice if they were made with 3x3 with 9 coal blocks, and still smelt a stack of 64, but i'm not sure if that'd decrease the usefulness of it.. And particles. They should give off particles after being stepped on, like redstone ore. A kind of dust.
(I keep seeing the 'add this with redstone block', and I'm reading this in 1.5.1. XD) Full Support! +1 for you!
Keep it up!

But then it would mean that blocks are somehow wasteful. I think it should smelt 72, but most people will just use it to smelt a stack.

I agree but for a different reason. All blocks use 9 of the item. But I think the coal blocks should smelt 72 items (64 + 8).
For completely even reason. 64 is full stack.
1 block = 9 coals, to keep it consistent with the other ores.
1 block = 8 coals during smelt, to seamlessly smelt a full stack without a waste.
Got many stacks of cobblestones? Put a full stack of cobblestone and 1 block of coal in furnace.
Blocks, of course, could be crafted back into 9 coals.
I have tried Vanilla With Sprinkles mod, the block smelts 64 and crafted with 9 coals.
