I like this idea. You can actually make this is your good with java coding..
Soming I'd like to see in this demention is Glow caps. they spawn rarely and give of light level of 3.
you can craft the glowcaps to produce a single glowstone dust.
They can't multiply like normal mushrooms.
That's a pretty decent idea, since bio-luminescence is prevalent in Earth's abyss'.
Edited the original post somewhat.
Also, two questions here: Should there be some gray, dead trees that occasionally generate as a way to obtain coal and sticks for emergency torches, and should water placed in the Abyss change into Ice automatically? I think that'd add to the atmosphere.

I agree with the trees. Incredibly flat stuff gets quite boring after a while.
Also, I think there should be structures in the Abyss. There could be relics of a forgotten civilization, overrun by the darkness.
For instance, there could be an abandoned castle made out of Abyssal Stone. This castle could have a "moat" that is a bottomless pit that surrounds the castle, and four spires to serve as towers. There could be an Onyx throne and chests filled with goodies where a king once sat, but surrounding the throne could be berserker spawners. Just an idea.

I was trying to think of some structures, but the only thing that kept coming to my mind was that giant black slab that them monkies find in that one Stanly Kubrick movie.
I think i see a flaw in your reasoning on how to get there: if you occasionally enter it while sleeping, whats stopping an unsuspecting player who has almost nothing to keep him/her from dying in there, and just started playing, from building a bed, sleeping in it, and accidentally appearing there? if you dont have flint and steel, how would you keep replacing the torches? i think this is a good idea, but it might be way to overpowered for newer players.

It could easily be set so that you only have a chance after entering the Nether for the first time.
Edited first post, added Structures and Vegetation section, added new special blocks, edited several enemy entries, added some info to the general enemy information, added Banshee enemy.
There should be fog, up to your ankles. If you stand inone place for too long, the fog, called Abyss Fog, will rise, consume you, blind you, and slowly suffocate you. Also, you should have a mob, that is a shadow, can only spawn in complete darkness, and is fully black, except for 2, white eyes. This mob runs straight at you. If you hit it, it bursts into a cloud, and disappears. Does 1/2 heart damage. 1/2 heart life.
Meh. There's enough enemies and already Black Mist.
Well, if we want to do that, I'd need to get the support of a good modder/modding team.
The terrain generation shouldn't be too difficult, for chasms, just modify the ravine generation; for structures, trees, and vegetation, those should be no-brainers. I'm not entirely sure on the spires, they're different than stuff I've seen. Behavior of mobs and some of the blocks are the harder parts.
luv the idea, i would probably be the only inteligent 1 who puts glowstone in unreachable places then laughs his/her head off @ enimies who walk in circles under the glowstone while they are hacked to peices
It sounds a bit like a The End, but made as a full dimension, in stead of a small island.
Well, I want to clarify this for anyone else who's going to talk about it:
No, you can't compare this idea to the End, period. The End is a boss room, not a dimension. Sure, it's stored like a dimension, you get to it like a dimension, but for all intents and purposes it's a room. A great dimension like this shouldn't be compared to a room, it's like comparing a dungeon to the Nether.
Edit: Redoing some parts of the first post.

-Total Eclipse! Detonate an Eclipse Rock.
-ONYX! Find Onyx.
-Conqueror of Fear! Defeat the Leviathan.
Honestly, I'm not sure how this is like The End. I see how it's like what it COULD have been, but they're really different.
