There are already two types: survival and creative. Actually, even more if you count the vanilla-ness of the server and how much the OPs interfere. Adding one more game mode would be fine.
Anyone can still play on any of those servers. If this idea happened, then not everyone could play on every server. That's what he means by it splitting the community. If I want to play on a survival server right now, I can go do that. If I want to play on a creative server, I can go do that. But if I don't have this HD thing or don't have a good enough computer to run it, I can't play on those servers.

Actually, you wouldn't need a fast computer. There could be a setting to not render the shards (but you still get them). Still, I don't think this is a good idea. A better way to achieve realism would be to have the blocks stay cracked after you mine them partially or get exploded partially.

You might not but if the shards weren't rendered how would you know you got them all? If they just drop to the floor you could miss them. I have a good computer anyways but I know some people can't run minecraft too well.
jeez peoples calm down. He was essentially suggesting a "Minecraft 2" idea. You do not need to badmouth him because he would like Minecraft 2 to be different than the current minecraft

Most people are badmouthing Minecraft 2 period. What is there else to do? A sequel would essentially be the exact same thing as Minecraft: Dig, build, do whatever. The tiny differences suggested here, nor any other differences you could think of, would be any better in a brand new game than they would as a later update in the original. In other words, it's better to update the old game to your standards rather than insert something completely new, especially with Minecraft. Another example, you wouldn't catch Nexon making Maplestory 2, would you? Or Blizzard creating WoW 2? What about Disney creating Club Penguin 2? See what I mean? It seems silly to have sequels to those games. Same applies to Minecraft.

THANK YOU!... I'm not saying to re-write the game because i want it a certain way... people over react too often.

Not entirely true. Roller Coaster Tycoon. The Sims. Both sandbox games, yet they've been making more and more money for releasing games with better graphics and new features for years.

I never said sandbox games, did I? None of the examples I gave were sandboxes. The games I mentioned are ones that are constantly updated. It's pointless to make a sequel to a game that will be updated in the near future.

This Minecraft HD mode would be created to support realism, correct? If it were to stray slightly from normal game mechanics, wouldn't obsidion be relatively easy to smash? However, if that were to be implemented, the idea of entering the Nether later on in the game would be completely ruined. Anyway, I like the idea of a more realistic Minecraft, but if it were to be implemented many fantasy elements of the game would be slightly ruined. (Yes, I know this wasn't discussed in the original post. I'm just giving my opinion on a realism/Minecraft mix)
I think the terrain generator should make big billboards, at least one per chunk, that advertise various things like Cheetos or Dr. Pepper. Would really improve gameplay.

I agree.
I remember in the Zelda mod or something the SINGLE FREAKING TORCH was causing so much lag that I just had to quit playing the mod.
